Book Review: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus

My friend Fred, who works as a publisher, recently asked in a Tweet if people would be more interested in a story in which: a) Interesting things happen to an uninteresting character, or b) An interesting character does uninteresting things. This interested me because I was just about finished with "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" by L. ( Read more... )

You need to see the insane television special for this story. It's the one I'm always screaming about, with Gandalf-Who-Ate-An-Ent (known originally as The Great Ak). Also, the Commander of the Wind Demons is a laugh riot if you turn off the volume and just make guttural screaming sounds every time he's on screen doing or saying something. We watched the whole thing on mute, and I was laughing so hard I almost passed out.

Also, Shonen Santa no Daiboken. The anime adaptation. We NEED to get this someday, somehow. It's got to be even more cracked out.

At first I'm all like, Ok, this is just a pretty full April fools joke those tow are playing, so I Google it. "Ok," I now think, "It's on ANN so maybe they are just playing along lets see what wikipedia says"

"Ok people are pretty thorough about the joke"

Clinking on the history, and seeing that the wiki page has been around for years, I have only one thing to say.

I don't know. I guess I'd have to read it myself to make sure it wasnt an intentional take on his character, though I think, especially for a fictional character, it's kind of strange that they might try to "defame" him. It's a strange and completely out of context way to look at him.

This guy probably thought it would be his masterpiece.

Well, by the time "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" was published, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" had been the top rated children's book in America for two years, so I doubt he thought this would be his masterpiece.

I almost get the feeling that he was so wrapped up in making Claus "virtuous" and "good" that he never gave him a personality.
