Ha, no I know exactly what you mean. Been there before, it was nice.
Bonus: I have had no "eye gunk" (the flagship sign of conjunctivitis in any form), and apparently eye injuries present similar symptoms (minus the eye gunk). Wilkins missed pretty epicly with a "got your nose" and knuckled me in the eyeball. It could just be a bad eye injury.
So good news is, it might not be pinkeye. Bad news is, I keep talking about it like it is.
One of the last times I got a really bad head cold just as I was really starting to feel all-around better one of my eyes turned bright red.
So even though there was no itchiness or eye gunk I went to see the doctor. It turns out there are two main causes of conjunctivitis, bacterial (red eye + eye gunk) and viral (which turns your eye scary red, with no gunk).
It sounds like you might be in the same boat that I was, but it is also very possible that Wilkins injured your eye.
