For the edification of the general public, myself included, there's a question that must be asked, and must be answered truthfully; for the writers, the philosophers, the dreamers and deceivers, the lovers and the libidinous: what is sexy? Just curious.

When I was like 12 there was a piece in People, of all things, that asked a bunch of celebrities what they thought was sexy. The only answers I remember are water, strength, and old books. Since then, I have pondered that question frequently, usually in the shower. I know I have some answers, but I know they're not readily available. I'll let you know. AWAIT MY ANSWERS WITH BAITED BREATH! BAITED BREATH, SEAN!

Oh, wait, I got it! But I can't state it succinctly or clearly. Restraint/frustration/tension/anticipation. Wanting something you can't quite have, or can't have fully, or can't have yet. That's sexy.

Also, Henry's just reminded me: Ryan Atwood's pain.

So I think I've put a finger on it. After some brainstorming and some idea sessions, I've got it.

Subdued beauty is what is sexy. Sexy on TV and on the movie screen is most often seen as inyourfacesexuality sexy. What's sexy to me, and this was something that I've grown to realize, is when a woman doesn't have to flaunt it to be beautiful. It's not about what you show, but what you don't show. It's like the old fan dances.

When a girl is beautiful but doesn't have to shove a plunging neckline and the subsequent cleavage into your retinas, that's sexy. That's dignity, that's pride, that's sexy. Everybody can say that someone is hot when that person's only clothing is the equivalent of a loincloth or similar clothing. But it's elegant subtlety that is truly sexy.

Well, I'll give you one hint. It rhymes with "shocker."

I think that it is a quality, honestly. There are some men I have met that are not necessarily physically attractive, but there is something about their personality which makes them sexy. It's a quality in the aura, perhaps it is confidence and believe in their own sexuality, or the knowledge that they possess it, but whatever it is, subtly anyway can pick it up.

Perhaps it's realizing your own inner sexuality and being comfortable and open with it, something not many people actually can do.
