Act 4 - [Accidental Voice]

[Have the sound of a frustrated Scotsman crumpling up some paper and tossing it aside.]

Bah, after only using computers for only a few decades, here I find myself wishing for a computer I might use for my own convenience. 'twas shortsighted to make good on a promise I only made due to a trick of the mind.

... ach, out of paper again. Damn.

A computer? What might that be?

'tis a device of modern construction. Ye might consider it similar to these journals in many respects, but capable of so much more. Through only one computer, one has access to a wealth of information that would make this very library look like a mere user's manual in comparison.

But let's nae dwell on that. How do ye fare today, Iris? 'tis been some time since we spoke.

But that does sound quite fascinating. A shame such things do not exist here.

And I am doing well, and yourself?

[Hmmm... but actually they do. He just knows not to mention them.] Indeed, it would be of great use to all of us.

I've settled in quite comfortably, given the circumstances. I am no longer the only occupant of my floor, but privacy is overrated.

Computer?

These journals aren't terribly different from as much.

Perhaps in what they can be used for, they are very much alike. But the same could be said of a horse and chair.

You cannot "hack" a horse or a chair. You cannot program them.

Ye can program both a computer and one of these journals, likewise one can also sit on both a horse and a chair. But whereas a computer has a versatility of multiple functions the journal lacks, so too does a chair lack the ability to move that a horse does.

I feel the same. [Complete with a slight chuckle there. Of course, H is only about fifty... he's estimating this guy is the same as him or a little older. Same situation that is]

My stay in Luceti has made it all too apparent that I had come to rely far too much on modern conveniences. As a lad, I would have never imagined becoming so familiar with such futuristic marvels. [Amazing things like the video cassette, the microwave oven, the automobile, the steam engine, the print press, the world being round...]

Likewise. [A pause and then he chuckles a bit-] These journals often make me miss cell phones all the more.

Indeed. A book makes for a poor phone, no matter how novel the idea might be.
