Anyone know what the hell I'm supposed to do about getting stronger and winning battles here when the Pokémon this place first gave me is a possessive pain in the ass and the egg I'm getting won't hatch for a while? Wait for the egg to hatch and concentrate on training it. If the other is truly possessive, it won't like this. Use that as leverage to point out you need its cooperation in order to give it attention as well.

Either the starter will fix its act or it will deal with being benched while you level up a more willing one.

Trading him means letting someone else deal with his jealousy. I dunno if I'd feel okay doing that.
