Technical difficulties

So tomorrow I'm going to get my pretty new computer, the subject of great angsting on my part. Understand that I know zip, zilch, nada about all things tech, that I hate spending money on things I don't understand, and that in the past few weeks of computer shopping, I have endured:

* A techie friend who spent an entire weekend trying with alarmingly evangelical zeal to convert me to his brand of computer. (I can now say with no small degree of confidence that when cult people off themselves on command, it's probably not because they believe in their leader. They just want him to shut the *&^% up.)
* A computer guy at a major store who talked to me for an hour and consistently addressed me as "dude." (Granted, I wasn't wearing makeup or a skirt, but honestly.)
* A three-day argument-via-note-attached-to-my-door with the modem-delivering UPS guy, who seems either unable or unwilling to accept that my other "household occupants" (i.e. the cats)lack both the opposable thumbs and the authority required to sign for a package.
* Well-meaning but annoying friends who ask me what I'm getting, then promptly tell me what's wrong with it. They did this when I was looking at PCs; they did it when I was looking at Macs. I'm now telling people I sprung for a really nice abacus.

And that's all before I attempt to hook the crap up.

On the plus side, all my bile has been percolating nicely into fic ideas, and, fueled by a not-insignificant number of Hostess DingDongs, I'm having a wholly uncharacteristic spasm of fanfic productivity. And so far none of it involves someone flipping out in a computer store. I take my victories where I can get 'em.
