In light of the fact that today is Earth Day I decided to not only do outside earth friendly things but to post.
This has, not shockingly, been delayed by the fact that the pictures on my iPhone are being held hostage by said phone. I will therefore, hopefully, be able to add visuals as soon as the negotiations are concluded.
Rather than coming directly home from my part-time job (being held until I become a full-time working person at some point in the future), I decided to take advantage of the utterly perfect day. Utah has few perfect spring days, and they are intermingled with rain and snow and freezing temperatures - but today was one of the gems. The sky was utterly azure, the temperature hovered around 75, there were no clouds, the birds were singing, the trees blooming, and I took a picnic to the canyon for lunch.
After less than a 10 minute drive (in my environmentally and some claim "White and Nerdy" silver Prius, I might add), I was at the trail-head for Lisa Falls. I would love to show you a picture, but... see above.
I climbed the trail in my utterly inappropriate shoes, wearing my entirely inappropriate work outfit, and carrying my purse as opposed to a knapsack or backpack, but none of that mattered. Lisa Falls was found. I did not break my leg on the steep part due to inappropriate footwear, and I had lunch by the falls. It was gorgeous and constitutes the first official hike of the season.
Driving down the canyon after lunch I came across a sign for an "Interpretative Hike" and ended up going to the Temple Quarry Trail. This one is flat with lots of benches, paved, and has a number of signs detailing interesting history. It was fun. This is the site where all of the stone for the Salt Lake City Temple was quarried - in the 1800's, and then transported by oxen and wagon the 20 miles to the building site. There is a reason it took 40 years to build. I would show you some pictures here, as well, but um.... yeah, see above again.
I finished my equally highly inappropriate Diet Coke in the old fashioned amphitheater on the site. I waved at the mountain goats high up on the cliffs, and had the quiet of the day disturbed only by the abundance of birds, butterflies and tiny lizards (no seriously, tons of butterflies today).
All if this was within a bike ride from down town. It was brilliant. I'm thinking I need to spend more lunches checking out a few more of the trails I've never seen. Next time I'll bring hiking boots and water. :)
