You should get a big dog.

I saw a dog last night who would fit that bill, but he seemed already...attached. Besides, the big ones hardly ever chase mice--ours never did. Terriers sometimes will, but they're shrill little beasts and I won't keep one.

But sometimes rats don't like it.

I'm Sirius Black.

That is true. A big dog would keep them away even if he didn't chase them himself.

The mice will be gone tomorrow.

And I'm a pine marten. Or shaped like one, at least.

Yes, so I've been told. It's still unpleasant for everyone involved, I think.

Pine marten? Is that what you are? I couldn't tell--I do apologise for mistaking you.

If this does keep up, I shall have to ask if the Cheshire Cat's services extend to preying on these talking mice. Chatter is enough, but constantly....

You're the chatterer between the two of us, you know.

Oh, I'm aware, but that doesn't automatically ensure I enjoy others' chattering.

Hmm, now that is true.

It was recommended to me that we get a large dog to keep the mice away. We never did have much trouble with mice with all the dogs around, did we?

Oh!

...

Well, I don't think you're the dog I met last night, but...well, now I've truly a talking dog to add to the list. It's a pleasure to meet you.

I wonder what dog it could have been then.

Regardless, it's good to meet you. And if you can speak, I suppose you have a name? What ought I to call you?
