# 64. Multitasking

Jul 09, 2008 15:34

"You are distracted"
Stated, plainly a challenge
to see just how I will react,
or maybe his touch at truth.

"I'm not distracted, just multitasking..."
I turn my attention aside again
while I wait for him to respond.
Peruse the story, poem, webcomic
that now holds my interest.

"Is there a difference?"
The flash of the chat box is an alarm
I quickly click to assure him.

"Yes, of course there is,
distraction would result
in my attention being held by something else,
while multitasking allows me to divide
my attention between..."

I have been scanning the page
hiding behind the chat box
multitasking slips and I
lose my train of thought

"Uhh, between, umm, multiple...
multiple tasks. Thus multitasking."
I conclude the thought triumphantly,
turn back to the text.

"A task?" The box flashes in irritation
"So talking with me is a task?"
I wrench myself away again.

"Umm, no, what I meant was..."
The cursor blinks its vertical eye
waiting for the truth
I hesitate, not really wanting to admit it.
"Yes, I am distracted."

"I thought so."
He smiles and settles down
preparing himself to cause distraction.
