61. Fairy Tale

I am the girl who married the animal,
often because of my father's mistake
in promising something not really his to give.
Yet there are times when I said yes
simply because I could love you
past all the feathers or fur.

I am the girl who lived year in and year out
with a husband half man, and half beast
and loved you none the less for it.
I envied your freedom of running, or flying wild
but settled for tasting the wind on your tongue
knowing that you would always be mine.

I am the girl who, though I have my faults...
Yes I lit that candle, accidentally dripped wax,
yes I made mistakes that tore you from me.
...loved you enough to start on this journey
did not stop to gather supplies, did not stop
to say goodbyes, but left immediately to follow you

I am the girl who rode the wind, spoke to the sun,
followed the moon, strapped iron to my hands and feet,
walked my way through seven pairs of shoes, wore my clothes
to shreds, crossed poison fields, glass mountains,
spent years following you, catching only a glimpse
of your fur, your feathers, the flash of your eyes.

I am the girl who infiltrated the foreign country,
the witch's castle, just to spend three nights outside
your bedroom door, just to wash the wax from your shirt,
your chest, just to cook your wedding feast, just to risk
everything I had journied for in hope that you
would recognize my ring, my face, my voice, my song

I am the girl who accepted you for who you were,
loved you enough to follow and fight for you,
wanted you enough to break this curse,
risked my life to find and save you.
After all this, open your curse stained eyes
and love me for who I have become.
