But my old comp is about the same age, with about the same amount of memory, and it didn't run as slow as that. I'll agree with everyone else and say you have some kind of problem. Dedicate a few weeks to turning off extraneous things (under system options, also bg programs) and running various (virus, and scandisk-type) scans.
I say a week b/c that seems to be how long it will take, by your indications.

Sounds like your ram is mis-seated. I can come over, disassemble your PC and put it back together blind folded in under an hour and it should fix the slowness down. (I've had it happen to me before).
We can also "Upgrade" you to Windows 98 SE or linux. Regardless you should invest a whopping $20 on a 2 Gig or larger flash drive. We can throw a linux boot on the USB key and back up what you need on to the disk from linux.
That would roxxor. I still have my 98 disks if we need to downgrade, but I'd ultimately like to get my system working properly with XP installed if it is at all possible on this green earth.
