mine was being weird like this awhile back and it was because gmail's built in chat was overriding the client side. It might be stuck in google +'s internal gchat system. Try changing it in gmail?

you can download google talk and then it's a program on your desk top.

Or Adium, or iChat (the one that comes with Mac OS X).

Google Talk can be weird, especially if you log in on multiple computers, and I've seen it get into these kind of states before. Mine flipped my AIM account to "Available" and would never set it Away, no matter how hard I tried. The only way I was able to get it to stop was by creating a new AIM account called "StopItGoogleTalk" and logging into that one.
