Matsu had already left for the night, and his partner was about to do the same, when he heard the furious banging on the office door.
“We’re closed, come back tomorrow,” he called, wanting to go home.
“Soukichi, please, it’s me. I need your help.” The woman’s voice on the other side was desperate, and he could hear the tears.
“Fumine…?” Narumi Soukichi quickly unlocked the door, and ushered the woman and her bundle into the room. “Fumine, what’s going on?” He offered an arm out to her, but she brushed past him.
“You have a bed in the back, right?”
“I do, but…”
“That’ll do, for now, then.” She hurried to it, setting down her bundle. Except it wasn’t a bundle, it was a child.
“Fumine, is that…?”
“It’s my son, Raito. I need your help.”
