my law class read an article called "if the world was a village of 1000". the article was based on u.n. estimates from 2000, that captured the number of citizens from various religions and nationalities, as well as literacy rates, access to clean water and hiv/aids prevalance around the world.

when he raised the question, i immediately explained contraception to him. the teacher didn't pursue the topic at all or even ask why he didn't know or where he went to middle school or which teacher he had for sex ed at our high school. i refuse to accept that he just didn't pay attention in health class. it was the system that left him unknowing.

please tell me sex ed in the states is somewhat more..effective?

Well, I have to say that it's the school system's fault for skirting around the subject of sex so awkwardly. I guess it makes teachers uncomfortable. I mean, I know we're talking about your class, which isn't saying much for the caliber of person we're probably talking about (I know what kind of people are in your classes, your poor girl) but still, really when it comes down to it, it's the school's problem for giving up on these kids the moment they're any trouble. Ah, I'm ranting, so I'll quit while we're ahead and this doesn't turn into a 13 page analysis of how bad our education system sucks.
