Seeing all our old friends again is interesting, because...
...Kira got hot, a little. Didn't he? Well, everybody got a little hot, but Kira...not bad. And it's sweet to me that after all he's been through his mind is sharp as always - for a minute there with his "OH SHIT THERE ARE SANDALS in the poor districts!" revelation I thought maybe we'd be back to Aizen sooner than I anticipated (though I believe we will be) but no.
So that's what you've been doing, Mayuri - massacring innocents!
Am I wrong to be gleeful that the morally ambiguous part of SS is back on display? I'm not saying certain shinigami aren't good - they absolutely are - but the institution as a whole finds itself having to make decisions which are...unsavory, at best. Of particular interest to me is that Yama-jii doesn't bite Mayuri's head off for killing 28,000 people but instead says, "Well crap, we would've given you permission." I understand in some way it might be necessary, but SS's cavalier attitude about Rukongai has always made the situation intriguing in a way a more fundamentally "good" institution might not.
We also have Ichigo facing the commander here, and admitting he's suspected Quincy - Ichigo seems to be thinking for this arc, which makes me happy. And unfortunately, his actions seem to be the springboard for the army of Quincies to invade Soul Society. Now, I have a few thoughts about what happens from here:
1) I still believe he might very well get help from an unlikely ally possibly in the form of a mad Grimmjow, but I wish an Ulquiorra.
2) What happens if he pops back out of HM to find SS devastated? Or Rukia hurt/missing? Can you imagine? Shirosaki, what? Please let this happen eventually. I miss that little batshit crazy hollow.
...and can I just say that I really fret over the shinigami? I have a funny feeling several aren't going to survive.
