Still no mysterious swordsman!
Just...an awful lot of Yama-jii being pissed. Like, pissed, and setting everything on fire. Awesome.
A lot of the captains seem yet to be standing: Shunsui, Shinji, Kensei, Mayuri, Unohana, Komamura, Hitsugaya. They're in rough shape, but apparently the captain's rage inspires them to fight harder. I particularly liked how Shunsui said the captain commander's reiatsu felt like a reprimand.
Unfortunately, Zaraki Kenpachi got hardcore defeated also - and they named him as one of Seireitei's "potentials" in the same way they named Ichigo as one. I'm wondering: is it possible that Renji, Rukia, and Byakuya are considered "potentials" too? Might this have to do with them being taken out? I'm assuming, like everyone else, that Ken-chan isn't dead - just out of commission.
And then, at the end, Yama-jii confronts Buckbeard with his full name.
I am...curious, about where it's going to go. Yama-jii confronting Buckbeard opens up the possibility we'll get some background on this war, on SS, and on the Quincies in general. This chapter has a hopeful feel....but I still don't buy it. I wonder if I'm the only one who feels that Buckbeard is the one who will take down Yama-jii? I just don't think we're getting out of this mess without a death like that and the more time goes by the more I believe Byakuya might not be it. Unohana, Kurotsuchi don't look to be fighting, Ichigo is still stuck.... It would seem odd to me if Yama-jii sent everyone fleeing and then the battle just ended there.
We may never get back to HM at this rate.
Can I mention I love Kubo's handling of the fights in this arc? He's given extended focus where needed to demonstrate the deadliness of the Quincy, but he's not forcing readers to sit through every failed attack in every fight. I like this very much.
I wonder if we'll see Yama-jii's bankai?
