Nino tosses and turns himself onto his bed, their old bed. He’s been doing that for couples of hours now. His body is tired but it seems that sleep won't come to him. He moves to another side of the bed and feels the cold sheet. He winces and moves again. Then sits and listens to the silent surrounding the house. Something is missing, or more exactly, someone is missing.
Ohno has been sick for a week from typhoid fever, so he needs to be hospitalized. Now his condition is getting better, but the doctor hasn’t said he can go home. Nino has always accompanied him since the first day, but yesterday their children forced him to pay more attention to his own health because he didn’t look healthy, and yes, their family doctor said he need to rest or he, too, will be hospitalized. So, with much coaxing from their children, Nino gets to sleep at home tonight and the day after and after and after.
But it seems completely useless to sleep when there is no Ohno beside him. Home never feels this empty and never been this silent, even when they sleep. Nino still can hear Ohno’s breath or light snore, and he doesn’t like this feeling of emptiness and silent, not at all.
Nino opens the door silently, and is quite surprised to see everyone still wakes up.
"Daddy!" his daughter shouted at him. "What are you doing here? Doctor told you to get rest at home."
"I know, but I just can't sleep," Nino said, walking closer towards Ohno's bed.
Ohno smiles. "Kazu~" he softly raises his hand for Nino to take, and Nino does what he is supposed to do.
"Sorry if I disturb you," Nino whispers and kisses the back of Ohno's hand. Ohno giggles and shakes his head.
His son brings a chair to the bed side for Nino. Nino kisses Ohno’s wrinkle temple and takes a seat on the chair while holding Ohno's hand.
Soon enough they both drift to sleep. Their children look at them and smile because little did Nino knows, Ohno couldn’t sleep too that night. That's why they all were still awake at that hour. It is always nice to see their daddy and papa show how they love each other even without a word uttered. Even after half of a century they’ve been living together, they still love each other.
