here “Where the hell am I?” Nino grunted to himself since he saw nothing as far as he could observe. “And where is this mountain? There’s no mountain near the city, right?” Still grumbling, Nino kept walking through the falling snow on the top of an unknown mountain. Nino even didn't know how he could get there. All he meant to do at first was just going as far as possible. Maybe he had taken a different train. What he saw when he got out from the station was only a great pile of white snow, and stupidly, despite taking the train back, he kept walking because of anger. But now when his anger was finally subsided, he felt lost because he couldn’t see anything besides trees and snow.
The sun has almost set, Nino started to shiver despite the thick jacket he wore. In his dim brain he had thought something like, ‘At least I still have my jacket.’ But eventually he came to realize that he wouldn’t survive on a weather like this.
“HELLOOOOOOOO,” Nino screamed in despair, “IS THERE SOMEBODY OUT HERE???!!!!” Only the sound of the wind answered him. He walked aimlessly through the snow when he found a light from a house not far from there. “Finally, a house! I’m saved!” Nino shouted happily before running towards the house. It was a simple brown wooden cottage, with small stairs to get to the entrance door. The stairs were covered in thick snow, signing that it had not been stepped on for a long time. There were also small windows, two on each sides of the door, and other two at the attic. Nino knocked at the white door, but he got no answer. He tried again and again but nothing happened. Nino tried to turn the door knob and found that the house was not locked.
“Excuse me~” Nino’s voice echoed inside the house, but still, no answer, so he dared himself to go in further. He opened a room with a light inside and found fire in the fire place. Nino warmed himself and drifted to sleep due to his tiredness. “Ohchan,” Nino mumbled in his sleep, not knowing that there was a pair of eyes has been watching him.
It all started with Nino happily prepared everything for their anniversary: he cooked, prepared the bath, cleaned the house, even bought a present (a full set of painting including some canvases) and wrapped it neatly and stored it in his Ohno’s painting room. But the clock kept ticking and there was no sign of the older man. He did remind Ohno about this day (because the older man kind of having sudden amnesia), and Ohno promised him to get back earlier from work. Yet there was not a single sign of Ohno even though it was already midnight. Nino reheated the food and was still wondering where his lover was. He tried to call him but got no answer. Nino watched the clock. It’s five seconds after midnight already, and it was officially the next day of their anniversary. And Nino had it enough. He left the house, feeling angry, and before he realized it, he was already in the middle of nowhere.
Nino rubbed his sleepy eyes and yawned, wondering where he was until he remembered that he was lost in an unknown mountain. The fire had died, leaving ashes around. The sun crawled in from the curtain, shining the room with a kind of dim light. Nino could see the entire room clearly now. It was not much to see, though: a bookshelf covered in dust and spider webs on the corners, broken long chairs nearby, a small table with a slightly broken mirror hanging on the top of it. Just then Nino saw it-an umbrella hanging from the table side. It’s not that Nino was obsessed with umbrellas, but unlike the other things which were covered in dust or spider webs, the umbrella looks quite clean, and new. Nino stood up and took that suspicious thing, then opened it. He was never fond of anything cute (despite the fact that he himself was cute), but there was no other word best to describe it better than ‘cute’. The broken white based color became more colorful with some purple and pink little flower here and there. Inside the umbrella was covered with silver thing, signing that it could be used for both extreme heat and rain.
“Uhum.”
A voice cut Nino’s thought. He jumped in surprise, gripping the umbrella tighter as a shield. A man in purple coat was looking at him in a scary way from the top of bookshelf, and Nino wondered from when and where the man had come from.
“Would you mind returning the umbrella?” said the man, moving his leg around.
“Ah” Nino suddenly realized he was still holding the umbrella. “Is this yours? I’m sorry, I didn-”
The purple man waved his hand, clearly motioning Nino to silent, and it did work.
“That is mine or not isn't your business.” The man’s whisper made Nino shiver. “Put it down. NOW!” The man screamed when he saw Nino didn't make any move.
Nino immediately put the umbrella back so it was hanging on the table like before. He turned to look at the man who now had taken out a stick from inside his pocket. He waved it in such a way so that the umbrella flied onto his direction. He then waved his stick once more, and the room suddenly became clean.
Nino’s jaw dropped when he saw all of these beyond-belief things as he rubbed his eyes and pinched his cheek, convincing himself that it was only a dream, and he would wake up soon and found himself still laying in the middle of a dirty room. But he felt the pain when he pinched his face, so this was not a dream at all, Nino thought.
“You are standing on my property,” said the man, and Nino raised his head to see him jumping down and walking slowly towards his direction. “All that you see is mine and this house is mine.” The man already stood in front of him and moved his face closer to Nino. “And I have to punished you. Now what should I do with you?”
Nino gulped. “M-me?”
“Yes, you! Or maybe I should do something to your Ohchan?” The man walked closer to a mirror.
“Ohchan?” Nino shocked. How could this man now about Ohno? But having seen all of this magic, maybe he didn’t have to wonder more. “How?”
“How do I supposed to know?” The man raised his thick eyebrows. “Who do you think I am?”
“Hmmm, a wizard? Fairy?” Nino tried, but the man laughed.
“A fairy?! Never in my life somebody had said I was a fairy,” and the laughter died. “I’m a devil, the greatest devil above all. Matsumoto Jun.” Nino gulped some more. “Now choose, you or him?” Jun motioned Nino to look at the mirror, where he saw Ohno in there.
“Ohchan!” Nino ran to the mirror.
“You or him?” Jun asked again, his voice was echoing around the room.
“Me, please don't do anything to him,” begged Nino.
“You love him that much?”
Nino nodded and it was enough to make Jun laugh some more.
“Interesting. So, since you will never meet him again, I allow you to see him for the last time.” Jun waved his wand and Ohno in the mirror started to move. Nino stared at the mirror speechlessly.
“It seems that he doesn’t love you that much,” Jun said when the reflection showed them about Ohno having a party with some girls and boys. “You have been left for already a day and he seems like he doesn’t mind at all.”
Nino kept silent. He raised his hand to touch Ohno in the mirror. So this is why he did not come home yesterday, Nino thought. He didn't remember what day it was because he was too busy. And the mirror now showed the laughing Ohno drank beer from a big glass. Nino’s fingers traced the older man’s face. He shed a single tear. “Maybe he did not love me anymore.”
“So, the last chance,” Jun said, “You or him?”
“Me,” answered Nino, his eyes were still glued to the mirror.
“Wow, that’s new,” Jun said, amused, “He had left you behind. He didn't look for you. And he clearly hurt you. But you still choose yourself?”
Nino nodded. “Because I love him. It may be a good thing if he doesn’t love me anymore, so he won’t feel sad when I’m gone.”
Jun shook his head and grinned, showing his flashing eyes to scare Nino, “What a great catch I get.”
Jun raised his hand, making Nino close his eyes, ready for the death that would come to him at no time. Soon his mind’s gone blank white.
~~~~~~
“Kazu! Kazu! Kazu! Wake up!” Nino heard a voice that he dearly wanted to hear, and felt somebody shaking his body not so lightly.
“Nhh,” Nino tried to open his eyes just to meet the light from a lamp.
“OH MY GOD!! Thank goodness, you’re awake!”
Nino felt his body being lifted from the ground and someone was hugging him tightly. Nino blinked for few times to adjust his eyes with the light. He turned to see the one who was hugging him and was surprised when he could see Ohno's brown hair in his sight. He turned his face again and realised that they were in the middle of the park near their home.
“Oh-Ohchan?” Nino didn't trust his eyes.
And when the man took a step back, he was convinced that it was Ohno. Real Ohno.
“Kazu, I’m so worried,” Ohno said.
“How?” Nino started.
“I’m sorry I got home late, I’m so sorry. I didn't forget that it was our anniversary. There was an error in the office system, and all of us had to work over time, and the boss also confined all of our phones so we could be more focus on our job. I heard the phone call for few times but I couldn’t do a thing. When I finally got home, I couldn't find you. I looked for you everywhere but I was not able to find you. I even didn't come to the office today. Still, there was no sign of you at all,” explained Ohno. He started to cry.
“Looking for me? But you just had a party with your friends, didn’t you?” Nino’s head started to spin around, didn't know who he had to trust.
“Party?” Ohno shocked. “What party? Who said that? I don't know what you have heard about me but it was a lie, Kazu. I have a fairy that can prove it to you.”
“Fairy?” Nino asked back.
“Un. There were two of them, one in green and another in red. I ran across them when I was in search of you in a kind of deserted area. Actually, the red one had asked me a question.” Ohno lowered his head.
“Question?”
“You know, he said that they would give me a new you-the you that would do everything I said, the you that wouldn’t get angry whenever I got home late, the you that would allow me to go fishing whenever I want to.” Ohno looked at Nino, and Nino could see fear from his eyes. “But I said no. If he only does such things like that, then it wouldn't be you anymore. It wouldn't be you whom I fall in love with. It is not you at all. And all I ever want is you, I’m sorry Kazu, please, Kazu, don't leave me again, please.” He hugged Nino again. This time, Nino returned it back.
“I’m sorry I left you alone.”
Nino didn't know what had happened to him, nor to them, but whatever it was, he was glad that they were already okay now. “Ohchan, what is that?” asked Nino when he realised that there was something near Ohno’s feet.
Ohno picked the stuff and showed it to him. “It’s my present for you,” said Ohno proudly.
Nino eyes widened when he saw the same umbrella that he had seen at the cottage. The exact umbrella that belonged to the devil. Oh wait, if he remembered it right, the devil didn't say that it was his, though, Nino thought.
“You do realise that it is for girl, right?” asked Nino before sighing when he looked at Ohno’s confused face.
“Eh? But it reminds me of you. It’s so cute, just like you, you know.”
Hearing those things, Nino could only swallow every word that he wanted to say. He just nodded. Ohno helped him raise on his feet, and soon the pair left the park together.
“Ne, Ohchan, did the fairy say other things to you?” asked Nino when they were on their walk back to their home hand in hand.
“Un, somehow the green one said something like this in a cheerful tone ‘wahh, so interesting, Jun-chan must have been so happy’,” Ohno answered.
“Jun-chan?” Nino shocked, something clicked in his head. “That devil!!”
“You know him, Kazu?”
“No, I don’t, and I hope I don’t have to.” Nino gritted his teeth.
~~~~~~
Meanwhile in the sky, three pairs of eyes were watching the couple walking together with big grins in their faces.
“You did it too much, Jun,” said the red, Sho, for he knew it all from the very start that Jun had made some fake pictures of Ohno.
Jun only shrugged his head.
“Can we do it again? Please? Please?” the green one, Aiba, was bouncing happily.
“Maybe. Just maybe,” answered Jun.
And with that, the three fairies flied into the night sky.
