Summary: Masuda Takahisa is a young man who lost all signs of the true meaning to live. But when he meets Tegoshi Yuya, a sick boy who has been in the hospital for a long period of time, his life gradually changes...

Masuda Takahisa, usually called "Massu" by others, 19 years old, has always had a gloomy life. There was just no hope for him. When Massu was 6, everyone in his family disappeared. His father, his mother, even his older sister, were killed by the yakuza, right in front of his youthful eyes. No hope. Soon after his family's death, Massu was taken into a nearby orphanage. Unfortunately, none of the other children played with him and none of the people working there cared for him, he was all alone. No hope. Even going to school each day for him was equally worse. All of the kids bullied him and his grades weren't that good either. No hope. By the time he graduated high school, he failed getting into college. No hope. After his graduation, Massu just thought there was nowhere to go for him. He was a lonely person just walking aimlessly through this world and saw nothing but darkness. There was just no hope...

One night, Massu was in the park, watching all the people pass by. But, it was raining cats and dogs so he could only see silhouettes of them holding umbrellas, few walking like they didn't really mind the weather, and few running searching for dry refuge. Massu sighed, got up, and started walking in the mesh of the crowd, and he didn't even care if he got wet or not. After walking for at least 30 minutes, Massu was sopping wet from head to toe, yet he didn't care. Moments later, a taxi drove by and muddy water splashed on him.

Massu's knees dropped to the ground. His body was cold and shaking and it couldn't stand the weather conditions, but he didn't care one bit. With his limp body on the ground, a hot tear in contrast to the freezing weather rolled down his cheek. Memories of his dark, dark past flashed in his mind. Why am I so lonely? Why must I...suffer...? Was his last thought before his eyes shut, making him go unconcious. However, the last thing he could remember faintly was hearing a man in panic calling out for medical assistance.

Many hours later, Massu's eyes reopened and he was in a cold sweat but his body lowered slowly in pain. His head was aching and the world felt like it was spinning round and round. His eyes examined his surroundings and he was in a white room with some empty beds and techonological machines.

"Where...am I...?" Massu questioned to himself in a weak voice.

"You're in the hospital." A gentle voice replied to him.

Massu was startled by his reply and turned to his side to see a boy about his age in a bed like his next to him, smiling softly. "Hospital...?"

"That's right, Haoto Medical Hospital. Are you okay? You seemed really uncomfortable while you were sleeping. Did something happen?" The boy asked, worrying about Massu.

Massu shook his head blankly and then he turned around when he heard the door open and a dotcor and a nurse came in.

The doctor was wearing black-framed glasses, a white lab coat that covered some of his sky-blue button-down shirt, red necktie, and tan-colored pants, his hair was some sort of dark blonde-like color, and he seemed about in his mid-twenties. The nurse accompanying with him was a bit younger and also seemed about Massu's age. Maybe he worked at the hospital part-time? Anyway, he wore pastel blue-green scrubs, his hair was a dark brown color, and had a fresh, yet handsome smile.

"Ah, Masuda-kun." The doctor spoke first. "It seems you have awakened." He smiled and took his medical chart in front of the bedpost.

Massu stared at the doctor and then his eyes caught the doctor's nametag clipped on his shirt pocket. The name "Koyama Keiichiro" was written on it with kanji. "What happened to me, Dr. Koyama...?" Massu was still confused on what was going on.

Koyama handed the medical chart to the nurse. "Late last night someone found you unconcious on the streets of Shibuya. Luckily that someone called an ambulance immediately and it brought you here." Koyama placed a hand on Massu's forehead. "Your forehead's still hot..."

Massu blinked. "I caught a fever? How...?"

"Since you were in the rain for a long period of time with no protection, your body became weak and that must be the reason why you're here. You still haven't fully recovered so you'll have to stay here for a few more days before you can be discharged. Understand?"

Massu nodded.

Koyama smiled. "Very well then." He got up and took the clipboard the nurse was holding at moment. "Come along, Shigeaki-kun."

"Y-Yes doctor!" The nurse replied firmly and followed him out the room.

Massu heard the boy from before giggle. "So your name is 'Masuda-kun'?"

Massu turned around and saw the boy bright smile at him. "Yeah...Masuda...Takahisa..."

"Masuda Takahisa, huh? That's a nice name! I'm Tegoshi Yuya, 18 years old. Nice to meet you, Masuda-kun!"

Massu looked down, trying not to look at Tegoshi even once. "Massu...Everyone calls me...'Massu'..."

"Massu... Then you can call me 'Tesshi' if you like, okay?  So, how old are you, Massu?"

"19..."

"Oh, then we're only one year apart. That's cool!" Tegoshi smiled again.

What's with this kid? Fair skin, brown eyes, brown hair, a sparkling smile. Heck, he even looks like a girl! People like him give me the creeps... Massu thought with a scowl on his face. He pulled the blanket over him. "W-Whatever..." And he fell asleep once more.

Tegoshi giggled again. Aww, he's such a shy guy!

Massu woke up the next day and saw no Tegoshi in his room. Huh? Where did he go...?

"If you're looking for Tegoshi, then he's now having a check-up with Dr. Koyama." A voice came from the doorway.

Massu looked up and saw the nurse that was with Koyama the other day. "You're from...yesterday, right...?"

The nurse smiled. "So you remember me, huh?" He pulled up a chair next to Massu. "I'm Kato Shigeaki, 18 years old. But all my friends call me 'Shige' for short."

"Masuda Takahisa, 19 years old. I'm called 'Massu'."

"That's a cool nickname you got there!"

Massu let out a tiny laugh. "So, do you work part-time here?"

"Yup. But after I graduate high school, I'm gonna apply for Tokyo Medical University and be doctor here just like Dr. Koyama!" Shige smiled with a dash of hope in it.

Massu then frowned a bit. Seeing people with confident looks like that disgust him. "Why do you even want to be a doctor in the first place...?" He asked with a hidden, bitter tone.

Shige's excited expression calmed down. "Because my father passed away...two years ago..."

Massu flinched. "Eh?" This was the first time he was really interested into a shocking story.

"When I was 16 and came home from school, my dad was pale-faced on the ground in the dining room. His body was all shaky and sweaty and he seemed to be in a seizure. I was so worried so I called the emergency hotline and screamed into the phone, 'Help me! My father's on the floor in serious pain! Please, come quick!'. 20 minutes later, I heard the ambulance sirens outside and a medical team came rushing in. Amongst those doctors was a newbie of the staff, Dr. Koyama, he was still 22 at the time. All the doctors were really doing their best trying to save him. But, out of all them, Dr. Koyama was the most hard-working. He kept shouting, 'You can do it, Kato-san! Just a bit more! Please keep it up! Don't die!!'."

Shige sniffled and wiped a tear on his cheek and continued.

"Those words Dr. Koyama said were so heart-warming and he seemed really caring. But the moment my dad died, Dr. Koyama came up to me and hugged me really tight while whispering, 'I'm so sorry, Shigeaki-kun. I didn't want your father's life to end like this. Please, forgive me...'. At that moment, I felt relieved. He was so worried about me because someone special to me was now gone. A few weeks later, I came to the hospital he worked at, which is here, and asked for a part-time job as a nurse. Even since the day my dad died, I decided to become a doctor like Dr. Koyama and save many lives like he does!"

Massu couldn't think of anything. He felt really bad for what happened to Shige. So I guess I'm not the only one in pain, too...

"Shigeaki-kun! What are you doing here? Get back to work!" It was Koyama's voice from the doorway. Tegoshi was right beside him.

Shige stood up and bowed. "Y-Yes! Sorry doctor!" And he rushed out to help out Koyama with his many patients.

Tegoshi sat down on his bed and looked at Massu who was still thinking about Shige's past. "Is something wrong, Massu?"

Massu shook his head then looked up at Tegoshi. "Tesshi, why are you in the hospital...?"

Tegoshi smiled weakly. "Because I have respiratory disease..."

"'Respiratory'...?"

"It refers to my lungs. You see, I've always had I weak body, ever since I could remember. When I was in 7th grade, I was at school and collapsed. I was then rushed to this hospital and was told I had pneumonia, which a sickness when the lungs fill with mucus and get all inflamed. But since mine was a bad case, I had to stay in the hospital for at least two years and miss junior high..."

"What happened to your education...?" Massu questioned in curiosity.

"A tutor came to me everyday so I learned from him. When I turned 15, the doctors said I was healthy again and could be discharged and since I had a tutor teaching me the whole time, he said I could go to high school. I was really happy. But once I entered high school, that's when things turned even worse..."

"'Even worse'...?" Massu got all worried about someone for the very first time.

Tegoshi's mood drooped. "You see, when I was little, I really liked to play soccer so I joined the high school team. But each timed I practiced, my breaths became shorter and I coughed a lot. The members of the team were worried but I shrugged them off. And then when I had my first match, I collapsed like I did last time 2 years ago. But this time, I could hardly even breathe. I was really scared. When I was sent here again, they said I had mild case of asthma. Even though it wasn't that bad, the doctors were really worried about me and thought I might get weaker so they kept me here and told me never to do any sort of physical activity..."

Massu's head sagged and he bit his lip.

Tegoshi shook his head. "S-Sorry about telling you that story! It must of bored the hell out of you, right? Huh...Massu...?" He then saw Massu covering himself with his blanket and was all confused.

Massu's body shook in fear. Even Tesshi is feeling the same kind of pain also? I never knew...

That night, Tegoshi was peacefully sleeping until he heard a small hiccup-like sound. Was it Massu? He got up from his bed and walked up to look at Massu and see what's wrong. Massu was gripping his sheets while tears streamed from his eyes.

"What's the matter, Massu? Why are you crying?" Tegoshi patted Massu's back to make him feel safer.

Massu got up and was still crying. He spoke between sobs. "I don't wanna...l-live...anymore...it's s-so...painful..."

"What are you talking about?" Tegoshi put a hand on top of Massu's.

"I've lost...everything...my family...f-friends...j-just...everything!! And now I'm so...l-lonely...I have...n-nobody..."

Tegoshi eyes widened. He tightly hugged his friend.

"Te...sshi...?"

"Don't say that, you're not alone! Shige, Dr. Koyama, everyone in the hospital is here for you! But most importantly, I'm here for you!!" Tegoshi kept holding Massu as if he was about to vanish into thin air any second.

Massu cried even harder. Tegoshi was the very first person to care about him. Ever. It was an amazing miracle to find someone was with him. Sharing the same pain together...

And that's part one for ya! ;) Part two shall be coming up soon enough...
Wow, this is the first time I'm writing such a sad story, kinda scary in a way, since I'm always writing romantic, happy-happy stories... xDD;;
But it's a good time like this when you have to take a different twist, no? :3
