I like this, even though I don't have a clue what it's fanfic of. But it's well-written and reads like a scene from a Regency romance of the spicier variety.
Oh. It's Hornblower. Edward Pellew was a real naval captain (later admiral, and knighted, and eventually a viscount, but this is before all that) who was played by Robert Lindsay in the movies, and Kitty Cobham is a purely fictional Hornblower character, played by Cherie Lunghi in the movies. As Cherie Lunghi and Robert Lindsay played Beatrice and Benedick in a 1984 BBC production of Much Ado About Nothing, I like to joke that Kitty and Pellew have a History when we see them together on screen.
My friends on tumblr know this. And when the picture of the dress with the ship wig came across our radar this morning, mumblingsage said "I want to read the Age of Sail fanfic about that outfit." One thing led to another and I was teased into writing it as Kitty/Pellew. :)
I'm glad you like it! Technically the date makes it Georgian and not Regency, which is like giving it an automatic 1d10 boost on Spiciness. ;-)
Kitty's so much fun. Of course, I wrote something very like this with ANOTHER of her admirers... which only goes to show that she doesn't so much age as improve.
This is so visual. I can see it unfolding behind my eyes, like a movie. I can see him, standing there so handsome and young, and her smile, and even her shoes!
The dress and the head-ship are really stunning. I do imagine it must have been heavy though.
I don't think she much liked it, either! Bu it was part of her job. I'm sure it was a great relief to take it off and have Ned take down the pins in her hair.
Several of Ned's letters to his best friend Alex Broughton have delightfully vague references to things from the past that Alex is enjoined never to mention but in a fond nostalgic sort of a way - I think this may be one of those best kept secrets of youth!

No Kitty icon, have Lady Barbera Skelton instead.

Ned must have been bemused by women's fashions.

It would explain so much about the doubtful looks he's giving "the Duchess" over dinner.
