Chapter 14 - In which Nino learns to appreciate the umbrella
*
Ohno looked tired when he opened the door for Nino. He just tilted his head.
Nino cleared his throat, feeling awkward, and he breathed a sigh of relief when Ohno moved to the side, letting him in.
“You feeling better?” Nino winced at how that sounded, and he winced even more when Ohno looked away.
“Why are you here?”
“Well, you see,” Nino started, scratching his head, “I, uh, have a problem.”
Ohno blinked.
“Because, you know, I’m a jealous moron.”
“I know that,” Ohno said, sounding weary. “Anything else?”
Nino’s palms were sweaty. “I’m not that good with words,” he said, “even though I decapitate people verbally.”
And when Ohno looked at him, he quickly continued, “but, I don’t like if others touch you. And yeah, I’m jealous, but that’s because I really really like you, but it scares me and I have no idea why I do what I do. I don’t think about what I do, because you make me do weird things, and you make my stomach do weird things and it’s creepy, but I kind of like it.”
“Is it my fault?”
Nino backtracked. “No! No, I mean, it’s all me, I’m stupid and well…”
Ohno blinked again.
“And my mom likes you,” Nino stated and when Ohno didn’t say anything, he continued, “even though she hasn’t met you. And she’s probably already arranging our wedding. And I like your mom, even though I haven’t met her. And I like your friends, though whether or not they like me is up for discussion.”
Ohno still didn’t say anything, and Nino was getting a bit desperate. He held out the umbrella.
“And I have your umbrella,” he said, “but I don’t really want to give it back.”
“Why?”
“Because I like it. It’s quirky and not like any other umbrella.”
Nino really hoped that it was a hint of smile he detected on Ohno’s lips. Ohno reached out for the umbrella and closed his fingers around it, while Nino didn’t let go.
“I don’t want you to touch someone else’s umbrella,” Nino said, meeting Ohno’s steady gaze.
Ohno tilted his head, and yes, that was definitely a small wry smile. “But I can touch yours?”
Nino breathed out loudly. “Assuming I ever buy one, yes, all you want.”
“But this one,” Ohno said, closing his fingers around Nino’s on the umbrella, “is ours.”
Nin could have sobbed from sheer relief. As it was, he settled for the even sappier response.
“I sort of really really like yo- oh, screw that, Oh-chan, I love you.”
Nino really wished he had said that a hell of a lot earlier, because Ohno’s smile had never been that wide.
“Despite my fat ass?”
Nino laughed. “Especially your fat ass.”
Ohno wrapped his free arm around Nino so tightly that Nino felt like breaking in two, but he wouldn’t ever tell Ohno to let go.
“You’re cute when you’re jealous,” Ohno said, “but don’t go homicidal, okay?”
“I make no promises,” Nino warned and he smiled when he felt Ohno’s lips move against his skin.
“I make you do weird things?”
“You make me run across Tokyo to talk to you,” Nino closed his eyes and just breathed in. Ohno was here. “You make me want to show you to my mom. You make me want to set up all my game consoles at your place.”
And to Nino’s surprise, Ohno’s response to that was; “Why not?”
Okay, when Nino hugged Ohno tight, he admitted that he was being a total sap.
*
The day Nino officially moved in with Ohno in the warm apartment above the gallery, he received various housewarming presents. He received slippers from Ohno’s mom, socks from Sho (“because Satoshi tends to forget to turn up the heat in the winter”) and a book on kama sutra from Aiba (“Seriously, Captain is very flexible, and when he- OW, your rings, Jun-pon!”)
But the real surprise was Jun’s gift. Nino hadn’t expected anything, even if they had made some kind of truce. Jun had, in a not so subtle manner, told him that as long as Ohno wanted Nino, Jun wouldn’t do a single thing, and Nino appreciated that peace offering for what it was.
So, when Nino opened Jun’s gift, he just threw his head back and laughed, because a brand new blue umbrella with fish on it peeked out innocently from within. Now Nino knew who had given Ohno the umbrella.
And later that night, when he and Ohno switched umbrellas, Nino honestly thought, you’re a good guy, Jun.
But then Ohno kissed him, and all philosophical thoughts he might have had flew out the window.

No, seriously. The end of Bonfires came much quicker than I had anticipated, and it has been so funny and has made me so happy. All of you guys have been amazing to me and the comments for it have been hilarious, sweet and heartfelt, and while I was planning on posting this even if you were going to hate it, I’m just so very floored that you liked it as much as you did.
I was worried at the beginning of this, because it’s nothing like what and how I usually write, but all of your sweet comments just made it worth it, so thank you!!!
So, for everyone who read, commented or just laughed, thank you so much, you’re incredible and made me feel so happy.
