Make sure to take a couple thousand mg of vitamin C a day. Echinacea wouldn't hurt either. I'm fucking paranoid about college diseases too, which is why I have a large can of dysinfectant spray in my room.
The meningitis vaccine doesn't protect against the deadliest strain, does it?
True. It only protects the 4 types of the meningococcal bacterium strains. These are the most common strains, and thus the vaccination covers approximately 70% of the disease origins.
However the vaccination is only 85 to 100% effective in the prevention of the 70% demographic.
Viral meningitis has no cure, your immune system must fight it off. Bacterial meningitis can be easily treated with antibiotics if it is caught early enough. The strain that Caitlin had was oddly enough one of the meningococcal strains.
And about the home remedies, I know all of those two. However, I'd never take that much Vitamin C. It hardens your arteries over time. I have some Echinacea-infused green tea. However, due to all the stress I've been under lately, my immune system is shot. I should be okay though, I wasn't close with Caitlin.
I think that part of the reason that this is such a big thing is that nearly 10 years ago a student here died from the same thing. For a lot of our professors and people around here, it's still fresh in their memories.
I figure I'm alright cuz I'm optimistic and rational like that. The school in general is on edge though.
Hey hun. keep yourself health, that's all I ask. Just remember Matt Farbotko, he had meningitis and he's still alive. I'm sorry to hear about Caitlin, it's a horrible loss. You have meningitis, my school has clamitia and G-d knows what else. I'm always scared of those things cuz I have such a weak immune system, but you're healthier and stronger than I am, and I hope it stays that way. Please keep yourself safe and healthy. Lotsa love. Happy Thanksgiving. <3 Leah
