Hamburger Samurai
First Runner Arioka Daiki
My name is Konesuke. I am a young samurai that’s about 18 years old.
However,
I don’t have the courage to slash people with my blade, and up until
now, I have never pointed my sword at anyone. Maybe I’m not suited to be
a samurai…
A special characteristic of my appearance is that my
hair is a natural perm. At the top is a round topknot where the hair
gathers like a flower stem.
One day, I was hungry, so I
decided to cook something. It was a really simple recipe where I just
randomly cut vegetables, mixed it with the minced meat that I bought and
just fried the stuff that kept kneading over and over in the fry pan.
Despite that, it was a taste that I have never tasted before, and it was
really delicious.
What is this dish?
This food that is shaped a bit like my topknot hair…
In order to solve this mystery that is arising in my heart, I have decided to go on a journey.
Second Runner Takaki Yuya
I
didn’t really have a destination, so I just took the path that was
right in front of me and headed west. After walking for about an hour, I
saw a big river. In the river, I saw the fish prancing around, so I
thought I would have them for lunch and started fishing. However, I
didn’t have any tools with me, so when I tried to catch them with my
hands, all of them ran away. I became desperate, so I picked up a branch
that was on the ground and when I threw it in the river, it seems like
it stabbed something. I hurried over to the spot where the branch
stabbed and turns out it a furiously mad kappa stuck it’s face out from
the water.
Looking closely, the branch was stuck in it’s head.
“What the hell are you doing!? It hurts!” said the angry kappa.
I
wanted to fix it’s mood, so I gave it that food that looks kind of like
my topknot hair that I first made a while ago and the kappa yelled
loudly:
“What is this? It tastes even better than cucumbers!”
The
kappa returned to a good mood and said, “I’ll show you something nice,”
and suddenly grabbed my arm and pulled me into the river. There, I saw…
Third Runner Nakajima Yuto
When
I thought it was going to be a treasure chest, it turns out that it was
a giant plate that was adorned as if it was really important.
“This
is my dad’s most important plate. It’s kept inside the river so that it
doesn’t become moldy, but I’m wondering if my dad forgot all about this
plate since he doesn’t put it on his head at all anymore…What should I
do?” the kappa asked me.
I don’t know the common sense of a kappa,
so I only thought of one thing. If I make the dish of fried kneaded
meat and put it on the giant plate, wouldn’t the kappa’s dad also become
interested?...
I went back on shore and took down some of the
forests bears and deer. I kneaded the meat and fried it and put it on
the giant plate.
“Alright! Let’s bring this to your dad!”
While
the kappa and I were trying to find his dad, the food looked so good
that many wild animals tried to steal the plate. Starting from this
moment, it was a survival lifestyle of whether we eat or get eaten.

Fourth Runner Yamada Ryosuke
Before
moving the dish, I decided to take down the animals that appeared in
front of us at once. I removed my topknot hair and threw it at the
animals! When I did that, the topknot hair quickly turned into a
shuriken! The kappa that was watching next to me was quite surprised as
well. After that, we were able to successfully deliver the dish to the
kappa’s dad.
After praising the dish with “Delicious” for a while, he said this.
“I feel like I have tasted this somewhere before. That’s right, I believe it was at the Yamada Palace in Strawberry Village…”
Maybe the secret of this topknot hair dish is hidden in that palace.
After giving a bow to the kappa and it’s dad, I headed off towards Yamada Palace.

Fifth Runner: Yabu Kota
As
I headed for Yamada Palace, a huge, completely red door closed off the
entrance to the castle. I pushed the enormous doors with all my might
and prized it open.
Thereupon, a short, cute butler who called himself "Chinen Yurinikofu the Third" greeted me with a smile.
Right away I show him the cuisine that was on top of the plate and Chinen the butler said this:
"The secret recipe to this dish is no doubt held by the lord of the palace DaYama SukeRyosanda the Eighth-tono. (T/N: -tono is a suffix added to the names of feudal lords) However, I will not let you see DaYama-tono that easily! Only those who defeat me in battle are allowed to see DaYama-tono."
I timidly asked, "What kind of battle is it?" and Chinen the butler suggested a strange battle.

Sixth Runner: Okamoto Keito
Chinen
Yurinikofu the Third came up to my flustered self and said quietly,
"Lord DaYama SukeRyosanda the Eighth-tono, who holds the secret recipe,
is a very splendid person. Lately he can't decide on his hairstyle and
is very stressed every morning because of that. So lets have a battle to
see which of us can make a splendid chonmage for him." (T/N: chonmage is that knot hair that samurais have)
Right
then, the sliding screen opened and a shaggy-headed DaYama SukeRyosanda
the Eighth who looks like he had just woken up appeared!
...I panicked.
I
am good at making this dish that looks like my chonmage. However, I
have never done a real chonmage. My chonmage is actually...just a wig
As I literally had my head full, I realized something.
Come to think of it, this is a battle for me to see DaYama SukeRyosanda the Eighth-tono, but I'm already seeing him!!
Having not realized that, Chinen Yurinikofu the Third grabs his scissors and said, "Let the battle begin! I will go first!"

Seventh Runner: Inoo Kei
"Like I would lose!" I thought and grabbed scissors as well.
....Hm? Where is this...?
I looked around my surroundings and it was a room in the hospital.
What I was holding wasn't scissors, it was my wife's hand!
No, not "sessha", I'm Arioka! (T/N:
the whole time throughout the story, the main character has been
referring to himself with "sessha", which is a samurai's way to refer to
themselves.)
I probably fell asleep for a very long time, and my consciousness gradually became clear.
I'm
not a hamburger samurai, I was just a business man that's preparing for
retirement. My wife is terminally ill and has not woken up for weeks.
The doctor has told me that she probably does not have very long.
Thinking back, it's been 40 years since I met my wife. I was always just
caught up with work and caused nothing but trouble. Maybe I fell into a
long dream in order to run away from this regret and this reality of
never being able to talk to my wife again.
But, why a hamburger samurai...?
At that moment, my wife's hand moved!
She opened her eyes slowly and looked this way.
January 2013
Eighth Runner: Yaotome Hikaru
My wife who regained her consciousness stared right at me.
Darling...Darling...
"Eh! Why?"
Even though my wife's mouth wasn't moving, I could hear her voice.
I've
written everything up until now in a novel, but I just told you the
very last piece of work. Please make it into a novel with your hands...
It seems that my wife used telepathy to tell me the story of Hamburger Samurai.
"Alright. Let's go back into the world of dreams to see the ending."
I closed my eyes again.
Arioka's consciousness once again overlapped into the continuation.
In
the continuation, he was unable to find any hints at Yamada Palace and
continued on his journey. There, Arioka kept in mind one hint.
That dish is called hamburger. It's the taste of one's mother...
"Was that god's voice just now? I wonder what he means by the taste of one's mother."
I
was surprised by the voice from the sky, but I decided to stop my
journey here and just live normally. Eventually, I fell in love, got
married, and had kids. As I lived everyday in happiness, one day I made
hamburger for my family for the first time and my wife and kids smiled
in an instant!
"I see, so hamburger is the taste of happiness!"
February 2013
Ninth Runner: Chinen Yuri
I,
Arioka, once again awoke, and it was right when my wife took her last
breath. To overcome that sadness, I wrote the novel Hamburger Samurai
and published it.
The novel got a record for being a long seller,
and got adapted into a drama! On top of that, it became a movie. The
mascot for Hamburger Samurai was selling extremely well and there was an
unprecedented Hamburger Samurai boom going around society.
I
suddenly had a large sum of money on hand, but I just couldn't honestly
be happy about that. The reason was that although I was told the story
of Hamburger Samurai by my wife, another image was also conveyed to me.
That's right, my wife had someone else that she loved besides me. His name was Ino Okei.
He
was the youth who worked as my wife's assistant. I've told myself to
forget about it, but I just couldn't forgive him no matter what.
"Alright, I'm going to bring him down!"
I decided to go on a journey to take down Ino Okei.
(Will be continued in the second series, The Fierce Battle of Arioka vs Ino Okei)
*In reality it won't be continued.*
Why?!!!! why won't it be continued??!! TT,TT~ lol! si chii!! XDDD
