Picky Eating Adults

This is something I never understood myself because as someone who likes to cook I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food, with a few exceptions you might have seen on Cracked.com (Maggot cheese? Really?) I figure that if it appeals to someone out there there much be something in it to enjoy.

With that said, I've seen a fair bit of picky eaters ( Read more... )

I had a friend who refused to at vegetables... straight out REFUSED to eat them. Her excuse was that her mom never made her eat them as a kid. She also blamed her weight on her mom feeding her McDonalds as a kid but she stuffed so much unhealthy crap into her face but still refused to eat a few vegetables.

I'm sure some pickiness can spread from childhood where the parents just let the kid eat or not eat whatever without trying it but overall I never understood why you'd just not even TRY something new.

It in my opinion is a first world thing, we no longer eat to live in this country, we live to eat.

It is kind of ridiculous, especially as fruit and veg are kind of essential for a healthy lifestyle O_o

Strange on the olive oil thing, next healthiest oil as far as I can tell is rapeseed.

I've never understood picky eaters either, especially when they won't try something new because of how it looks, smells, or whatever. You never know if you'll like it unless you try!

I was raised by the pickiest eater I know, I'm glad I never inherited that trait :P

Picky eating is largely an attention grab. It means that the group has to come to some consensus that the picky eater must agree to. "We can't go eat mexican, I have a sensitivity towards tomatoes!" The group has to acquiesce to your preferences, and the suggestion, "how about we go there and you order something without tomatoes," is rarely accepted. They have to present options to the picky eater, and the picky eater decides for the group. Democratic decisions have been subverted, and once you get there, if the picky eater still isn't happy, they can start up the drama again once they get the menu.

Contrary to most picky eaters I've encountered, people with actual serious food allergies will often go to any restaurant you suggest and try to work out what they can and can not eat in a quiet sidebar with the waiter, and the intent is quite the opposite of the picky eater, more along the lines of "I don't want attention over this."

well to be fair she does try to work out something on the menu wherever we go, and the baby does in fact have the allergy, she (the baby) contracted the whey through breastfeeding one night and had a really nasty rash. So from now on we are very careful about that
