We’ve always been friends.

Ever since we were little kids, he was always the one I could trust the most. And I was the same to him.

Like when his parents got divorced five years ago. He and his brother stayed at my house for a month while their mom and dad battled it out in court. I did everything I could to take his mind off of the divorce.

Even after the verdict was announced and his brother left to live with their mother, he kept on smiling. He says that it was because of me that he got through that so easily, but I don’t believe him.

And when my parents died in a car crash last year, I can say that he literally saved me without hesitation. It felt like my life was crumbling around me. I was devastated.

I had isolated myself from the world and I fell into…unhealthy habits. You know, the kinds of things that every teacher tells you never to do. It wasn’t until he found me, about to die, in our old treehouse that I finally stopped.

From then on, he made sure I was always smiling, even if it was at his own expense. He wouldn’t let me fall back into the darkness that already consumed me once.

I guess that’s when I realized that I was in love with him.

Since then, I’ve always had this strong urge to tell him “I love you”.

Of course, I always restrain myself. I’d be risking too much. Our friendship is too precious for me to ruin with such a trivial thing. Being able to stay next to him all this time is good enough for me.

So, it’s okay if we’re always just friends.
