“So that’s my plan.”
I put my cup down, my gaze focussed on Cristoff. His eyes were bloodshot - why? My mind snapped back to the matter at hand when his voice reached my ears.
“Don’t do it,” he said sternly. “It’s not worth it.”
We both held our gazes, and for a minute we had a silent war. Neither of us backed down.
Tick, tock. Tick, tock.
Cristoff looked away, sighing in defeat.
“Look, Roni. I’m not going with you. If you want to break into his house, do it yourself. Just don’t come to me when you get thrown in jail.”
He got up abruptly, looked at me meaningfully, then turned and left.
I blinked, both surprised and hurt at his strange behaviour. I had a nagging feeling that something was wrong. I didn’t know why, but I felt like lately, our friendship has been falling apart.

“Shit!” I swore. I was climbing over Smith’s fence. A stray wire had snagged my pants, ripping them. I looked around - hopefully no one heard me.
Apparently Smith and the police didn’t feel the need to guard this house, because no one was around. I mean, it was like the desert! I could’ve waltzed right in and no one would notice - or care.
Come to think of it...why didn’t I do that?
“Oof!”
I hit the ground with a thump. Mentally kicking myself for not taking the easy way, I scanned the area. My eyes rested on a faint light coming from a window on the second floor. Strange. There shouldn’t be anyone here.
I decided to stop with the spy masquerade and walked to the front door. I tried the door - unlocked. Stepping in, I looked for the stairs. Following the dim, almost ethereal glow, I made my way up the stairs and down the hallway.
I stopped in front of the room the intruder was in. I gave the door a gentle push...and it slammed into the wall with a bang. I flinched, looking away for a few seconds.
The sounds of papers fluttering and furniture being knocked over came from inside the room. By the time I recovered and dashed in, he was gone. A curtain fluttered, revealing an open window.
I let out a groan, and turned my attention back to my search. The intruder had taken the source of light with him, so it was almost pitch black in the room.
Almost.
A faint blue glow came from the corner of the room, near the bed. My eyes rested on a computer, focussing on the screen. There was a pop-up window asking if I wanted to delete a file.
Hn. That’s interesting.
I took a seat in front of the machine and made sure that said file was not deleted. Then I opened it. It was a music clip.
As soon as I heard the first few words, I froze.
“He he he...I told you you’d come back. Drugs are addictive, aren’t they...Cristoff?”
