Monday. The park was deserted when I arrived. My staggered breaths made themselves clear in the crisp winter air. I was about to be late this morning, so I hurried here. I glanced at my watch. 9:00AM. Good. I can’t afford to be late.
Snow had already begun to fall, and a thin layer of it had already settled on the bench overlooking the playscape. I brushed off a space large enough to sit, and plopped down on the wooden surface.
The snow gradually thickened. I watched as the area around me got transformed into a Winter Wonderland. It was ethereal, enticing; enchanting. And soon, I lost sense of time.

Tuesday. I’m back at the park-9 A.M. sharp. I brought my phone with me today. I was going to reread all of her texts.
December 19, 2009. 9:03 A.M.
My mom kicked me out of the house again. I guess our Christmas won’t be anything like the ones from before. I’m spending the day at the park near the school.
December 19, 2009. 9:29 A.M.
I know you haven’t replied to my last text yet, but I got bored. Sorry for bothering you again. You’re the only friend I have. Let’s talk now, okay?
December 19, 2009. 11:24 A.M.
You still haven’t responded! Aww… But the snow looks so nice on the park. It hasn’t been disturbed. Don’t you love that? It’s just so magical!

We haven’t talked at all today. (>o<) I’m going to start walking home now. It’s cold. Hopefully my mom will let me back into the house. Good night!
The poor girl didn’t realize that I was just ignoring her texts. But later, I recovered and saved every single one.

Wednesday. It’s starting to get to me. The cold, I mean. And the loneliness. After all, no one comes to the park on days like these.
I brought my phone again. But after a while, my mind drifted off to the past. Happier times.
“S-So, I guess we’ll be partners for this project, right?”
“Yep. What’s your name again?”
“Maria. N-Nice to meet you!”
And then…
“Hey, Maria, you’re pretty cool. Let’s be friends. Here’s my number.”

Saturday. I had passed Thursday and Friday at the park, as usual. I read her texts over and over.
December 25, 2009. 9:17 P.M.
Hey… My mom’s not letting me back in. I’m lonely. Please talk to me.
December 25, 2009. 9:25 P.M.
I can’t feel my legs anymore. It’s getting harder to type… Why won’t you talk to me? It hurts…

Sunday. My parents protested when I told them I was going to a friend’s place. “We have to spend Christmas together!” they argued. “It’s a family tradition!”
In the end, I escaped. And just in time. I was almost late. Today is special. And the conditions were perfect, too. It had started to snow again. Light snowflakes. If all goes according to plan, it’ll become a blizzard. Just like one year ago.
It wasn’t until late afternoon when the blizzard hit. I’d been a little worried, but it seemed like Mother Nature would come through in the end. So I walked to her house. My limbs started to freeze. And when I finally got there, I sat myself down in front of their door and closed my eyes. With great effort, I whispered something to the wind.
“Hey, Maria. I’m coming now, okay? You won’t be alone anymore.”

Later that night, a phone that had been untouched for a year, buzzed.
December 25 2010, 9:37 P.M.
Merry Christmas, Maria! And… If you were still alive, you’d be sixteen now. But don’t worry. I’ll give you the greatest birthday/Xmas present you could’ve dreamed of.
…
See you in heaven.
