Summary: When Roni's friend Leslie gets arrested for a crime he insists he didn't commit, she decides to investigate.

"The hell?" said Cristoff.

I shot him a glare, and then turned to the police officer.

“I’m sorry, sir, but you must be mistaken. Leslie didn’t do anything wrong! I mean, he doesn’t even know this guy!” My voice got more and more high-pitched as she continued on. “Right, Leslie?”

Said boy was standing straight, still, silently. He didn’t struggle or even attempt to resist, to her surprise. His eyes, shining brightly only a few moments ago, were now dark and dull. They bore into me, answering my question, telling me…that he had given up.

“You…do?” I had to confirm it. It couldn’t be true.

“Doug is - was - Leslie’s tutor,” said Cristoff, his eyes narrowing.

I observed Cristoff, wondering how he knew that. I don’t remember ever meeting a Doug Smith, and we were inseparable ever since we were kids!

‘How…how did he meet him?’

My attention turned back to the detective, as he spoke.

“You’re right. And we have definitive proof that he did it.”

Turning back to the handcuffed boy, he started to recite the Miranda Rights. “You have the right to remain silent...”

---

Cristoff and I walked home in silence after that. Maybe I was just walking fast, but Cristoff seemed to move slower than usual. Cursing myself for being so observant, I turned my thoughts back to Leslie. Then:

“Hey…do you think he really did it?”

I was shocked by how small and scratchy my voice sounded. Apparently, so was Cristoff, because his eyes showed a hint of surprise and annoyance.

“Of course I don’t,” he blatantly stated. Then he turned to back to me, eyes searching. “Do you?”

“Like hell I do!” This time, my voice was stronger; louder; more confident.

“I’m not letting Leslie go to jail. He’s innocent, I know it. I’ll get to the bottom of this, even if it’s the last thing I do!”

---

“Come on, Leslie, we know you did it. Why don’t you do yourself a favour and ‘fess up already?”

Detective James Maloney was trying - and failing - to Leslie to confess. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working so well. The two had been sitting in an interrogation room for hours, and Leslie only spoke to deny the detective’s accusations.

“I already told you, I didn’t do it.”

“You know, your lack of cooperation will reflect poorly on the judge’s decision.”

“I know I didn’t do it, and that’s why I’m saying I’m innocent!”

Leslie glared at Detective Maloney, annoyance and impatience evident on his face. The latter sighed in exasperation, giving up for the day.

“Fine, we’ll stop for now,” he said. “Officer Rodriguez, please escort him to his cell.”

The uni nodded and the two left the room. Maloney sat down and sighed again, desperately hoping that the boy wouldn’t be as stubborn the next day.

---

A prison guard walked to Leslie’s cell, whistling along the way. He stopped in front of it, about to pull out his key, but stopped midway.

The cell was empty.
