Pairing: Shizaya, if you squint.
Summary: Whenever Shizuo and Izaya fight, the latter's heart always beats faster. And he can't stand not knowing why.
A/N: A monologue/drabble thing that was originally supposed to be PWP. ...Yes, I'm a fail.
Whenever I see him, my heart beats faster.
The rush of adrenaline I get when we dance across the city rooftops under the cover of night, the not-so-few times that he almost managed to hurt me, and the other times when the street lamp, vending machine, garbage can actually made contact with my skin.
Our game of cat and mouse was more than fun. It was exhilarating.
Being able to cheat death-which was, inevitably, in the form of a blond, sunglasses-wearing monster-every day made me feel like the king of the world.
I’m sure he feels the same way, running after me. He uses me for the thrill of the chase. I’m okay with that, because I do the same.
Sometimes I wonder if there’s another reason why my heart rate speeds up, and I feel like there are butterflies in my stomach.
“It’s nothing,” I tell myself. But at the back of my mind, I know there’s more to it than it seems.
---
I can’t figure it out, and it’s killing me.
I’m an informant. I’m supposed to know everything. And therefore I have to figure this out.
When we fight, I can sense his presence more than ever. His strength isn’t a match for my speed and agility, but even he gets lucky once in a while.
Everything else is dulled down when we play our precious game: a dance that only the two of us know the ever-changing steps to, a dance engraved in our hearts. A dance…just for us.
I’m always thinking of ways to add new steps to our dance-how to get close enough to slash him, and yet evade his messy punches.
He’s always on my mind.
---
Ah.
I get it.
We’re both monsters. But just like how animals have different species, we’re not the same either.
But we’re still both monsters.
And that’s why we understand each other better than anyone else.
---
Night has fallen again, and I’m off to Ikebukuro to look for the ex-bartender. I walked past Sunshine 60, Russian Sushi, so many other places passing by in a blur…
Suddenly I caught a glimpse of that familiar blond hair. Surroundings forgotten, I rushed straight towards it, giving the man a sharp tap on his shoulder.
“Shizu-chan~”
He turned around and I ducked swiftly as he threw a punch over my head.
And so we began our dance once again.
