Summary: When Roni's friend Leslie gets arrested for a murder he insists he didn't commit, she decides to investigate.

“Fine. I’ll tell you everything.”

I blinked. Huh. I never expected to get him to confess so easily and so quickly.

I guess he didn’t notice my surprise, or he just didn’t care; because he continued to talk, his head hanging.

“It all started at that party; the one where we met Doug. He was the one who invited us, after all. At one point, we were all separated: you found someone to dance with, Leslie was goofing off with some of the guys near the drinks, and I...I was with Doug.

“At first it was normal. We chatted about life, college, girls. But then...then he offered me a chance to experience something new, something different.”

He looked up at me with frightened eyes. I nodded, indicating that he should continue.

“I was naive. I know that now. But back then, I didn’t know any better. I wanted to be cool. So I followed him. We went outside, and there was a group of people sitting in a circle. He introduced me to them, then handed me a joint.

“I was so scared, Roni! I was terrified! But...”

He looked frantic now, on the verge of tears.

“But I did it.”

I wiped the disapproving frown off my face, returning to my neutral expression.

“Then...I got addicted. You don’t understand, it felt so good! I couldn’t help myself. I kept going back to him, almost every week. And...it’s not cheap. I went broke not too long after that. I-I owe - owed - him a lot.”

He looked pitiful.

“I lost everything, Roni. I sold so much of my stuff just to get some weed. And now, when everything’s gone, I still want more. It’s not just a want, it’s a need. I can’t live without it. Not anymore.”

I looked at him, trying to gauge his sincerity. Wait - why am I even having these thoughts? Cristoff is my best friend, and always will be.

My gaze softened. I stood up and walked over to him, pulling him into a comforting hug.

“Don’t worry, Cristoff. It’ll all be okay. We can tell your parents - I know they’ll understand. Trust me, Cristoff.
Everything will be normal again.”

He started to calm down, so I let go.

“Stay here. I’ll go get you some tissues, okay?”

He nodded, and I walked off towards the washroom, passing his room on the way there. The door was slightly open, piquing my curiosity.

I wonder just how much weed he has...

Looking around, I snuck inside. As I rummaged through his things, I felt a pang of guilt.

Should I really be doing this?

Shaking my head, I pushed that feeling away. My eyes focussed on a seemingly out-of-place shoe box. Crawling over, I opened it. What I saw was so unexpected and shocking that I dropped the lid, frozen in place yet again.

Drugs weren’t in the shoe box. Instead, there was a shiny, bloodstained knife.
