It's just a really nice coming of age story that follows a girl (who's mother died when she was 4/5) throughout her years up until its current incarnation, senior year of high school.
Hmm I read your other journal before I read this one. I'm sorry you didn't finish Firebird. It really is a good story but only if you know the whole thing. Honestly, I think you're reading too much into the descriptions in the book. I never paid them much mind myself. It's written from the perspective of a 16 (if I'm remembering correctly) year old boy who's practically nobility and highly shallow at the beginning of the book. Considering the author's other works, I don't think she's in any way making a statement about women or their body images, she's simply allowing the character to express himself from his own perspective. His perspective is sort of important to what ends up happening at the end of the book. It's the development of the character from shallow, naive, somewhat self absorbed teenager to what he is at the end of the book that makes it interesting. Plus I thought it was really interesting seeing all the old Russian folk tales "come to life" in the second half of the book.
