Author’s Note: First in the Inside 100 drabbly ficlet things.
Rebecca looked down at the beer placed in front of her and smiled her thanks at the waiter, who’d already moved on to the next customer. She ran her fingers along the brown glass, growing slick with condensation. Her eyes slipped around the table, to the other drinks scattered amongst bowls of peanuts and crumpled napkins.
Paul was nursing a beer, identical to hers but already half gone. Carter had something clear and bubbly she suspected was 7-Up. Mel kept swirling her drink around in her glass, something dark on the rocks, only occasionally drinking from it. And Danny...
He had something sweet and fruity with an umbrella.
Her gaze lingered on the orange-red concoction before lifting her own bottle to her lips.
She took a sip and shuddered. Putting the bottle down, she nudged it away from her and tuned into the conversation. Chiming in as much as she ever did, but it was getting easier.
The next time she looked down the beer was gone, the fruity drink was in it’s place and the bottle had somehow ended up in Danny's hand. She watched him lift it to his mouth, offering her a wink before taking a drink.
Smiling, she tucked the umbrella behind her ear.
