Should I get it?

I need to build a new computer. This one is old and a few components are obsolete making it impossible to upgrade without a full overhaul. I like to create a computer that can last me about 3 years before another upgrade of the proc or vid card if I can, but without going nuts with the latest and greatest tech. So here is what I'm thinking ( ( Read more... )

Monitor replacement will happen, just not in this purchase (I don't have THAT much money. :) ). And according to the reviews I've read the PS is remarkably quiet for its output so hopefully no problems there.

aw hell, might as well add the monitor it will be paid off in credit anyways, what's an extra payment if I'm already in the 1k range? (note: I almost never use credit cards, I think they are dangerous, but on big purchases like these I'm willing to make the exception)

Just wanted to chime in with a couple thoughts:

First off, you should ditch the processor, and use this instead. ;-)

Not enough memory. If you really want to build the system to last you for three years, I'd recommend 4 gigs, minimum. Of course, it all depends on what you want to do with it, but memory is cheap. Don't skimp. Also, if you're running Vista, get an extra gig of flash memory and use the ReadyBoost feature.

Same thing with hard drive space. I just upgraded from a 320 + a 250 to a 320 + a 500. But even with over 3/4 of a terabyte of storage space in my media center, I'm still feeling the pinch. FYI, this is the hard drive I got. I've always been loyal to Seagate, and this one is working great for me, so far ( ... )

Thanks, but I already have the proc, so Intel it is for now (I have used AMD in the past and liked them though). The case already has 3, never enough cooling I say! :D I will most likely get the 4 gigs eventually, but 2 will suit me for my purposes for now, and as for HD space, I don't do the media center thing, I just use a dvd player, but if I ever do I'll look into it, thanks for the advice!
