in the past few days i got a real urge to make moccasins, maybe it's because my existing slippers have had holes in them for months now. anyway, i was trying to look stuff up about them and realized that i never really saw "real" moccasins before, i only saw commercial ones (plain brown and all looking the same ( Read more... )

I love using leather for crafts but decent quality leather is very expensive, especially if it's in larger pieces (when they make strips or leather laces they can cut around the flaws, but a large piece without flaws is harder to find). And I've never even looked for sinew... most leather crafting styles I've played with use metal eyelets or rivets as attachments.

Yeah, I don't know how well tanning (leathering) dog chews will work out but I'm gonna try it as soon as I have the space/money!! Otherwise I have the salmon skin to fall back on, as when you buy salmon at least you're also buying food at the same time. I need to actually research if salmon skin is stronger than stuff like reindeer skin - I've read that it's SUPER strong but what I read didn't exactly compare all the skin types together, and "pulling strength" is different from "when will it wear out because I'm walking on it". Though people used fish skins to make shoes too, I just don't know how long they lasted in comparision to other skin types ( ... )
