Yes. People like this and hypochondriacs often go hand in hand, I've noticed. I delight in politely shooting them down by saying "Oh, that's rather common," in a slightly bored tone when they describe their symptoms. It's obvious that somewhere, some doctor coddled their medical-victim tendencies to get more business.

It is sad that you don't recognize it until you step outside of your comfort zone. Going to France (though I disagree with their politics) was a good experience, because it was my first sight of America from non-US eyes. I still can make an ass of myself, but I can *recogniz* when I do now. The I plant foot firmly in mouth.
