If this doesn't get resolved by the end of the week, start sending the loan company letters by registered mail. Then you have a paper trail to show to Uncle Sam when you're trying to explain why your income tax return shouldn't be garnished.

I am a geek and have spent a lot of time reading articles on MSN Money. You might find an article somewhere on the internets that'll give you good advice. Offhand, I remembered this one: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/ManageDebt/ZombieDebtIsHardToKill.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0

Also, you can get one free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus each year. Keep an eye on that. I'm a little fuzzy on how old debts can affect couples, so Tommy might want to pull his up, too. I check mine once a year just to make sure nothing funny's going on in general. It's a good habit to get into.

You seem you know a lot about this. I had the letter faxed to the man I've been working with about the loan and he has told me that my name is misspelled on the letter, but even with the misspelled last name I am nowhere to be found in their systems. I never misspell my own last name on things as important as loans. Other than that I was told to contact them at the end of the week as they try to figure out what to do. Does this sound super sketchy???

OMG That's horrid and it totally sounds like a scam from an unscrupulous loan company to me.

Good luck sorting it out.

If you can, I'd get advise from an accountant and see if the company can actually take your taxes.

:-( I'm so sorry!
