First, you need to check out this NYT article:

The issue that this article is making is that the current way things go for BIG companies like walmart is that they have a company that will, upon your termination and your application for UI, send a letter of protest and denial to the state agency that is processing your claim. The kicker is all they are doing is sending a form letter that does not have anything remotely looking like details in it. They just say you quit.
The point I'm making here is, if you get a denial, don't just let it stand, fight it and follow up, so you get the money you deserve from UI and the company that should be paying for it.
