There's A Distinct Bias Towards The Number One In These Questions.

Nov 26, 2024 18:35

I saw that hamsterwoman had done this television meme and thought it looked like fun!

TV questions: pick five TV shows you like (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don’t cheat!

1. Community
2. Lost
3. Supernatural
4. Scrubs
5. Death Note

1) Who’s your favourite character in 2 (Lost)?

I passionately love Jack Shephard. What an absolute mess of a man. Just a disaster. I love his desperate, ferocious need to keep everyone alive when he's completely incapable of holding himself together. He has a lot of very intense feelings about everything, and that's what I like in a character.

2) Who’s your least favourite character in 1 (Community)?

I think the show would lose very little if you removed Pierce or Chang. Hard to say which of them I like less. Pierce is more consistently written, at least; I felt the show had no idea what to do with Chang.

3) What’s your favourite episode of 4 (Scrubs)?

I don't know if I can say 'My Screw Up' is my favourite episode; it absolutely devastated me. But it's the first episode that comes to mind, just for the impact it had on me. 'Interacting with a hallucination or apparition of a lost loved one' is a frequently recurring theme in my fanfiction; I wonder if this episode is the root of it.

4) What’s your favourite season of 5 (Death Note)?

I don't think Death Note has seasons, exactly! So I'll answer this for the shows I have an answer for instead.

Community: season one, easily. I love seasons two and three as well, but I think the first season in particular is one of the best seasons of television I have ever watched. Very fresh, very funny. A good variety of character dynamics being explored amongst the study group. Britta's character is at its best; her writing really suffered in later seasons. Plus I love the ending of the season; it's controversial, but it really worked for me!

Lost: also season one! I enjoyed the entire show, but I really liked the simplicity of these strangers bonding and desperately trying to survive while stranded together on this island. It became a lot more complicated as time went on!

Supernatural: I think probably season two! Season one was a little too episodic, not enough focus on the Winchesters; later seasons became too sprawling and apocalyptic. Season two had a good balance; it was still episodic, but it also kept its focus on the brothers as the emotional core of the show. The stakes were personal enough to get invested in; they hadn't yet become exhaustingly, unrelatingly high.

5) What’s your favourite ship in 3 (Supernatural)?

I... don't actually ship anything hard in Supernatural. But I think it would be fun if, when Dean went back in time to 1973, he banged his mother and felt hideously conflicted about it.

6) Who is your anti-ship in 2 (Lost)?

I ship more or less everything in Lost. I can't think of anything I've seen people shipping and had a visceral 'no, thank you' reaction to. I could come up with hypothetical ships I'd personally prefer not to see - Michael/Walt, for example - but it seems silly to call that my anti-ship when I've never actually seen anyone shipping Michael and Walt.

7) How long have you watched 1 (Community)?

I started watching Community twelve years ago! It was a great decision, even if the show was not, as the Internet had led me to believe, primarily about the nerdy adventures of Troy and Abed. I had no idea there was anyone named Jeff involved and was confused to discover that he was the main character. (I love Jeff deeply! But he was a surprise.)

8) How did you become interested in 3 (Supernatural)?

I had a dream about it! I had a few LJ friends who watched Supernatural, but I knew very little about it. Then I had a dream about Dean Winchester trying to kill me in a dystopian future. It stuck in my mind, and a few months later I decided to check out the actual show.

9) Who’s your favourite actor in 4 (Scrubs)?

Everyone does a great job with the characters they're playing, but John C McGinley's performance as Dr Cox is an absolute standout. He does get the most memorable material, admittedly, which probably helps!

10) Which show do you prefer? 1 (Community), 2 (Lost), or 5 (Death Note)?

Oh, wow, this is an impossible question! I love them all so much, for such different reasons! And yet they're all flawed in similar ways, so I can't knock any of them out of the running for their flaws!

I think Lost probably had the most intense impact on me, though. Of the five shows I picked for this meme, it's the only one I discovered recently; I watched Lost for the first time last year. I've loved the other four shows for over a decade, but Lost made a big enough impact on me, in our brief acquaintance, to make it into the list.

11) Which show have you seen more episodes of; 1 (Community) or 3 (Supernatural)?

I have watched over three hundred episodes of Supernatural and cannot recommend the experience. The first five seasons are great! Don't keep going. It's not worth it.

12) If you could be anyone from 4 (Scrubs), who would you be?

It does not feel like a good idea to be any of these characters. If I get to choose, maybe Carla? She seems competent and relatively well-adjusted. If I'm assigned a character based on my personality traits, I have a terrible feeling I might end up being Elliot.

13) How would you kill off your favourite character in 1 (Community)?

I don't want to kill off Jeff! But I would have Annie kill him in a paintball tournament gone horribly wrong, when her ruthless competitiveness gets the better of her, and she would be really fucked up about it.

14) Give a random quote from 1 (Community).

'It's called chemistry! I have it with everyone!' (Jeff is an extremely shippable character, which is a quality I appreciate.)

15) Would a 3 (Supernatural)/4 (Scrubs) crossover work?

This could be fun! Sam and Dean visit Sacred Heart to investigate a series of mysterious deaths. Dr Cox would haaaaaaate the Winchesters. JD and Elliot would develop a big crush on both of them. It turns out the Janitor is actually behind the apparently supernatural deaths somehow.

16) Pair two characters in 1 (Community) that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.

I mean, Community has already done this with Jeff and Annie.

Maybe Jeff and Shirley? Shirley's beliefs (and her husband) get in the way of this ship a little, but she and Jeff have good chemistry (he has it with everyone!) and a cute dynamic that rarely gets enough focus.

17) Has 5 (Death Note) inspired you in any way?

Death Note has inspired me to write a bunch of weird fanfiction, all of which I have had a blast with.

18) Overall, which show has a better cast? 3 (Supernatural) or 5 (Death Note)?

I really don't know how to compare English-speaking live actors with Japanese-speaking voice actors! I'm going to say Death Note, just because Light's maniacal laughter and intense internal monologues crack me up so much.

19) Which has better theme music, 2 (Lost) or 4 (Scrubs)?

Scrubs automatically wins this by, uh, having theme music, but I appreciate this question for reminding me of this incredible fanmade Lost theme tune.

Of all the shows on the list, Death Note has my favourite theme music. Look at that opening! What an opening! Never before has a show about a notebook been so intense and dramatic.

Someone anonymously messaged me on Tumblr today to say that I should write more Lost fanfiction, and they're absolutely right. What a great show.

community, scrubs, supernatural, lost, death note, on writing, we all love hearing about dreams right?
