I'm so excited that Severance is back! Here are a few notes on the first episode of the second season.
I think this is the first time we've had an episode set solely in the office, as unable to see what's going on outside it as these characters are.
I was suspicious the instant Helly emerged from the lift. Helena has absolutely no reason to come back to the office. She doesn't need the money; her severance was a publicity stunt that ended in failure months ago. Her innie is a danger to her. Why would she ever return to being Helly? Is she actually here as Helena?
Helly commenting on the absence of the security cameras threw me for a moment - if she could recognise that something had changed about the office, maybe she actually was Helly - but, as my housemates pointed out, Helena would also know about the former location of the security cameras if she's seen the footage from those security cameras. And, of course, if this is Helena, trying to get information out of the innies, it's in her interest to go 'oh, hey, looks like we're not being watched! let's all speak freely!'
Either Helly or Helena might have made the decision to lie about her outside identity. But Helly's lie included small details I wouldn't necessarily expect from someone with no real experience of the outside world. She's generally being suspiciously quiet too, except when she's encouraging other people to talk. I definitely think this is Helena.
The claymation video is an absolute masterpiece. I crowed with laughter and applauded when it showed the kiss between Mark and Helly. What a thing for them to sit there and watch! What a way for their colleagues to find out what happened!
Really enjoyed all the intensity and closeness and touching between Dylan and Irving by the stairwell. And Dylan going 'the guy who was in love with you wouldn't want you to leave, and I know because I don't want you to leave'! Between that and Mark's desperation to get his team back, I really need to get back to that Macrodata Refinement OT4 fic I've wanted to write since the first season.
I'm never prepared for the sheer intensity of watching this show. There's nothing else like it.
