I said the words I didn't mean to say, never wanted to say, never thought I would have to say: "Don't you ever come back."
I am my father; in that exact moment I can see myself. I am watching as I yell the words he's heard before. I've seen this; the pain and rejection he shouldn't have to feel. I watch this scene play out and never once think to stop myself, like I never stopped my father. He doesn't deserve this, my baby brother; the child I carried out of a burning house, who I cared about more than anyone else, more than I let him know. Now I sit here in my own personal purgatory, replaying that scene and the one before it: comparing and contrasting. I am locked in with my own thoughts, worse than hell because this time I am torturing my brother. Over and over again.
