Character History:
Here be history Personality:
Van is very much the definition of a boy king, torn between an adolescent and a ruler forced to run and build up his country from the ground up. He’s often accustomed to the fanfare of being a king and being worshipped and adored, and thus comes off as a cocky, rude brat. Van can often be very loose lipped on what he thinks is right and wrong, and tends to not think clearly before he speaks/acts and often blurts out things. He’s most definitely not afraid to speak his mind, though in certain matters of politics he does know the appropriate time to speak and when to hold his tongue.
Being an heir to the throne and a forced warrior, Van has a very strong sense of pride and honor to his country, his friends and family, and himself. He is a devoted warrior, and skilled fighter in combat. He is constantly trying to better himself and his abilities in any way he can so he can get a one up in battle. He tends to have a “his way or the highway” attitude, and is often ostracized for going for the more drastic approach to a situation. Because of this strong sense of pride, he is always willing to fight to the end, and has proven to show his stubborn attitude in this way. In many ways, he is trying to prove to himself and to others his strength, and constantly is trying to improve his abilities to the point where his body can’t handle it. He still has a lot of growing up to do but does continue to grow and mature as days pass.
Because of his often boyish nature, he does have a softer, gentler side that many don’t see or notice. He’s often struggled with fighting and doing the right thing, and he doesn’t take joy in killing and in facts very rarely results in mortal combat. His brother comments at one point, how he is a gentle soul and that he is not made for such fighting and war. Van is confronted with this later, as at one point he refuses to fight, but his will to protect and his duty as king win out in the end. But as his feelings for Hitomi grow, particularly towards the end of the series, Van becomes more aware of those around him and he begins to soften up a little more, showing a little more of his gentler side.
Van socially is quite an interesting topic since he can get along with others fairly well, but has shown on occasion to be very much a loner. Not because he doesn’t like people but rather he wishes to act and be alone in order to think clearly, that and because of his lineage of being an outcast due to his mother being a Draconian. He by many definitions is a loner, and doesn’t let too many people in. The one extreme example is Merle, a cat girl whose like a sister to him, and pretty much is always by his side. But while he is a loner he can show off a rather sweet side, that’s borderline awkward due to the fact that he’s not really good at showing and/or receiving affection. In other words, Van really is deep down kind but just has a strange way of showing it at times.
Extra:
Character Abilities: Van really has no abilities per say. As mentioned before he does have wings (because of his lineage on his mother's side), so he does have the ability to fly. But he rarely, if ever, has the ability
He is also exceptionally good at fighting, both through his sword and through his guymelef (another name for mech) known as Escaflowne.
Possessions: He will be carrying with him his sword, which is his birthright as a Fanelian king.
Anything else:
--Van has "issues" when it comes to his family. When he was younger, over the course of the same year his father died, his brother "died" only to find out later that he had run away from home, and his mother has gone missing and has never been seen since she tried to look for Van's brother. Because of that he doesn't take too well to the idea of family and friends. It also explains why he's kind of a loner
-Van is often referred to in canon as the 'dragon' or the 'white dragon'. It mostly refers to the guymelef he pilots, Escaflowne, but the same can be applied to him as well.
-Van is used to strange animals and peoples. Its not all that common to see various humanoid figures and people in Gaea.

Here be a dear mun post Log/Prose sample:
Van had returned to the roof to clear his head, and to train. This had not been the first time he had done this, in fact it was all to common that Van retreated to a rooftop not only to train but to think as well. He let his hands fall to his holster, lost in the touch of the handle of his blade against his gloved hand. In that moment, nothing else mattered.
He withdrew the blade with a sharp sheek and clang, the satified noise of the blade leaving its scabbard. Sometimes the sound was exhilarating, in this moment it gave him peace.
Peace, huh?
Peace was not something that came easy to the Fanelian king. Never having a moments res,t constantly on pursuit from Zaibach, or some unseen force. But now, in this moment, it was just him and his blade.
He let his eyelids droop, letting his muscles tense as he readied for a cross cut. The pressure on his limbs was tense, but somehow relieving he felt so at peace when he was practicing his stances. He opened them wide before he brought his sword out jabbing forwards.
Van took a deep breath, raising the sword above his head before bring it straight down with an audible swoosh. He paused between strokes and closed his eyes, inhaling and then exhaling deeply. Sometimes, on cool nights like this, he thought of home. The sweet smell of the forest, of the merchants and the bazaar, all were sent off his homeland, now so distant and far away.
But then a scent, drifted up his known, one that was purely his imagination: fire, smoke, and ash.
Whoosh
Another sharp descending slash, cutting from up right down to his lower left side, followed by a resounding uppercut. Such thoughts wouldn't do for a king from Fanelia. He couldn't focus on the past or the present, not now anyways. No matter how haunted he felt about what happened to his homeland, he couldn't think of that now. He had to keep going, keep moving, keep fighting. It was the mantra that he told himself every morning when he woke, and every night when he rested. Since he had come to rely on Hitomi, such thoughts were often fare from his mind, but even the most strongest of men could get lost in their own mind sometimes.
This was how it was: to be a king that could never truly return home. He had to keep his eyes on the horizon, never letting his kingdom, his home out of his mind. No matter what he would never lose hope, ever.
But it was in that moment of reverie, of silence that he noticed something off. It was a disturbance, a presence behind him. He didn't turn, nor stir, just opened his eyes, now flashed with irritation. How dare someone bother him in this moment?
"Has anyone ever told you that sneaking up on someone is rude?", he replied with a slight bite to his voice. Hopefully that would scare the intruder off, but Van figured he wouldn't be so lucky as to get a moments rest.
