I'm going to Japan for a couple of weeks in September and I've realised I need to build myself a shopping list! Mustn't waste this opportunity to avoid shipping costs ( Read more... )

I've bought a Sanshin recently, but I didn't really have time to play with it yet... I'd love to play some Okinawan songs though at some point :)

Hello! How are you?

I better buy a Teach-youself-Shamisen book as well :) Do you have anything to help you learn the Sanshin?

Also have you had time to start The Bone Doll's Twin? Good or bad?

I'm fine thanks :) I had a lot of cat trouble. My 14-year old cat died at the beginning of summer... we got a kitten three weeks ago and then my 13-year old cat got sick (a persisting cold, but due to it we found out he has heart insufficiency, so he's getting heart meds now...). So a lot of heart-break and worry, but also bliss (the kitten is a big cuddler). Still quite emotionally draining the past few weeks.

Didn't get to read it yet, I re-read Tailchaser's Song in hope of finding a good name for the kitten (I decided for Pippin in the end though) and now I'm finishing the book I was reading before. I'll definitely let you know when I read it though :)

The sanshin came with a teaching book including a full translation of it. There's also quite a few videos on Youtube so that should help. So busy though that I can't really find the time or the strength to pick it up. Hopefully it will be better soon.

At least there's a JLPT now in Vienna. Thinking of trying the N1 in December :)

Good luck with N1! I'm still waiting to hear if I've passed or not :s

You have cats! You're lucky, I really like cats but I'm allergic to animals :( I once had a rabbit but I had to wash my hands after playing wih him and always keep him away from my face. It was bit annoying.

I've heard that a sanshin is easier to play than the shamisen but it seems they're made with snake skin and I'm not sure customs would like that... How did you get yours? Can you get them without snake skin?
