Archive. They are recording yet another episode of Star King and Kangin is getting more and more excited, or aggravating, depending on who is judging. It's been a long day yet again and the amount of energy the boy is demonstrating spells trouble to those around him, or would spell, should they have the strenght left to read between lines. Sungmin, hiding behind a small smile, hasn't. He consciously makes an effort to shut out the MCs loud, bellowing laughter and doesn't pay attention to the clamor surrounding him until he hears his own name, spoken by an overly confident and all too familiar voice.
"No, it's Sungmin!"
And before he knows it he is sitting perched upon an uncomfortable chair in the middle of the stage, clutching a guitar - not his - for dear life. He fumbles at first, painfully aware of the fact that everyone is staring at him, that the PD must be making a mental note to cut this part before the show airs, and Sungmin tries, really tries to come up with a song easy enough to perform at a thirty second notice. He turns to his fellow band members, eyes desperately pleading for help. He sees Donghee who is smiling encouraginly but shrugging at the same time, he sees Kangin and can't help but throw a mental curse in the direction of this particular hyung, he sees Heechul, Donghae, Kibum and then, finally, he sees Kyuhyun who isn't returning his gaze. And that's when he knows.
He doesn't say anything as he starts to play, not "This is a famous piece", not "This song has always been special to me", simply lets his hands find their position and feels his heartbeat calm down as the strings press against the pads of his fingers. Plastic, he notes briefly, the strings are plastic rather than metal and they lack soul in his opinion, but at least they won't roughen up his fingertips and give the manager yet another reason to nag.
Sungmin lifts his head as the intro comes to an end and acknowledges Shindong's jokes with a brief grin, assuring that no offence has been taken. The laughter hasn't quite died yet when he already starts strumming the chords, soon losing contact with the present for the second time that evening. The foreign words roll off of his tongue with surprising ease even though he has never been too good at English, but he asked Kibum to translate the lyrics once and for a reason or another he never forgot them afterwards.
"Now, I miss you more than
I missed you before, and, now,
Where I'll find comfort, God knows..."
Later in the dressing room Kangin smacks Sungmin on the shoulder in a violent but presumably friendly manner.
"Yah, that was amazing! Korea's number one guitar player!" Kibum, sitting next to them nods in agreement, but feels compelled - a leopard unable to shed its spots - to mention a small detail that has caught his attention earlier.
"But hyung, didn't you get the last line wrong? Isn't it 'you left me' rather than..?" Sungmin cuts him off and turns to him with a smile on his face.
"Yes, it is. And no, I didn't." Kyuhyun slips past them without a word, cheeks slightly flushed. Kibum looks at Sungmin who in turn follows Kyuhyun's slumped shoulders with his gaze until the door closes behind the younger boy. For a moment the remaining two in the room are quiet.
"You play well, hyung," Kibum's voice is steady and betrays no emotion, "you should play more." Sungmin grabs his jacket and starts to pull it on.
"Thank you, Kibummie."

Notes: The episode in question would be 071222 SBS Star King. I might be a deaf old hag, but I'm almost positive Sungminnie sings "'cause you loved me just when I needed you most" instead of "'cause you left me just when I needed you most".
The song and lyrics are written by Randy VanWarmer and belong to him and him only. May he rest in peace.
