She had been crying in that cubicle for over an hour, he knew, he had been in cubicle next to her, listening. Leaning his back against the wall, he continued listening to her sobs. Heartbreaking, really. He wondered who it was and why she was crying. Couldn’t be Myrtle, her wails were of a higher pitch. It didn’t sound like a first or second year. Nor could it be Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, this particular water closet was located near the Slytherin and Hufflepuff quarters. It didn’t sound like any Hufflepuff girl he knew, either.
As Wayne continued these thoughts, the unspeakable happened. He sneezed.
The crying stopped most suddenly, and a voice hoarse with sobbing spoke, “Who’s there?”
“No one!” Smooth, Wayne, really smooth, he thought to himself, banging his head on the door of the cubicle.
“...Wayne?”
“Yeah, Daphne?” How did he know it was her?
“How long have you been there?”
“Since Charms.” Half a day, really.
“Since I came in then.”
“Seems that way.” Keep the conversation light and easy, she might forget about having heard her cry.
“Wayne, you had better have your wand with you.”
“Um... Why?” Why did he suddenly feel like running away?
“Because you’ll need it to defend yourself when I come in there!”
Suddenly the door of the tiny cubicle was blasted open by a spell, and there was a very frightening looking Daphne. She looked a mess. Her hair was in complete and utter disarray, her eyes red from crying... Since when did Daphne ever look so defeated? So before he could stop himself he blurted out, “Merlin, Daphne! What happened to you?”
And before she could stop herself, she blurted out, “Michael chose her over me. It’s finally over.” Suddenly tears began to fall from her eyes and the Hufflepuff stared at them in utter fascination. Was this what real heartbreak looked like? And if so, how could he comfort it? Nervously, the boy rose to his feet and looked up at the girl who stood taller than him by a good four inches. Getting onto the tips of his toes, he stretched as high as he could and leaned forward, and before the Slytherin had time to react his lips mushed against her collar bone rather than her lips as he had intended. Letting out a shriek of surprise, Daphne toppled over backwards, taking Wayne down with her.
“Well, I suppose you’ve forgotten about Michael then?” He couldn’t help but ask as he stared down at the extremely irate looking girl beneath him.
Needless to say, Wayne spent the rest of the day locked in the loo.
