Hara Marina gazes out to nowhere in particular. She’s standing in the shades, with her hands resting on her hip, unaware that she’s being left all alone. Her friend who notices that she’s missing from the group starts running back to where she is, calling for her all the way.
“You know I can hear you perfectly fine. You don’t have to be so loud!” Marina says to her friend.
“Well here I am thinking I wasn’t loud enough”, her friend replies cheekily. “Let’s go and catch up with the others”.
Marina definitely has no interest in catching glimpse of boys no matter how ‘hot’ they are -or so her friends claim- riding on a bus, so she told her friend to go first. Being that it is such a nice day and all, she thinks of taking a lazy stroll before joining them again.
They just came out after finishing watching Johnny’s Summary in Harujuku when her friends revealed their plan. She thought that it wasn’t such a good idea when they’ve already seen the boys live. She kept the thought to herself though after seeing their enthusiastic faces, not wanting to spoil their fun.
And now she finds herself on the other side of the concert venue while her friends are some distance away from her. Their squeals of excitement can be heard even from where she stands. One of them is gesturing for her to catch up and join them. Marina just waves back.
Leaning on one of the trees lining the walkway around the venue, she decides that she’ll wait for her friends there. She starts humming a tune similar to one of the songs she heard from the concert, looking down while grazing the grass beneath with the tip of her shoe.
Lost in her thoughts, she is startled by the sudden sound of keys jangling from behind her; she turns around to find that the person making the noise is as surprised as she is at her sudden movement. She notices the keys dangling from the belt loop of his jeans first. Next, she notices the sunglasses hanging on the front collar of his red t-shirt.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you”, the boy says.
Marina tilts her head to look at his face. She recognizes him instantly. Although he was wearing a cap, she was close enough to see his face and his long, slightly orange coloured hair. She acknowledges that he is kind of good looking despite the weird hair colour, even better than what she taught he looked back at the concert. Maybe those costumes that he wore have influenced her opinion. They are not exactly complimenting.
Yamapi sees the girl’s eyes widen in recognition, causing them to look bigger than they already are, as she looks at him. Even though he’s in a hurry, he realizes that he doesn’t seem to mind the distraction.
“It’s alright... I was just surprised that’s all”, she says smiling and his heart unexpectedly skips a beat at that. He waits, expecting her to ask him something but it never happens. Instead, she averts her gaze to look at something behind him.
Marina is too distracted by her friends’ voices thinking they’ve spotted her with him. They’re not even looking in her direction though; their focus seems to be somewhere else.
“Ja... I’ll be going then”, he says. She nods and gives him another warm smile.
She watches as he starts to walk away. After taking a couple of steps he turns to look at her again and she wonders if he recognizes her. She pushes the thought the moment he looks away. She doubts if he knows who she, known as Horikita Maki in the entertainment world, is seeing as she’s relatively new in the business. But then again, she has worked with his senpais before.
She turns her attention back to her friends who seem to be getting farther away from her, running after a bus and covering quite a distance before giving up. Seeing her friends bending down and resting on the curb to catch their breath somehow amuses her.
Yamapi walks back hurriedly, hoping that the girl will still be there. He is relieved to see her standing at the same spot where he met her earlier. As he comes closer, he can hear her laughing .
“What’s so funny?” he asks. He would never be all familiar with a complete stranger no matter how cute they are in any other situation. However, he’s strangely drawn to this girl and he swears that he’s seen her somewhere before.
Marina turns towards him, evidently a bit startled. She notices that he’s holding a piece of watermelon in each hand. She also notices the absence of the keys this time.
“Do you have a habit of taking people by surprise?” she asks. He chuckles.
“I’m sorry...here, this is for you”, he says, offering her a slice of the watermelon he’s been holding, “As a gesture of apology”.
Marina’s actually quite surprised that he even bothers to seek her again. She takes the watermelon from his hand. Their eyes meet briefly and she sees him smiling, causing her to feel slightly awkward.
“You missed the bus”, she blurts out the first thing that came to mind.
Yamapi looks confused before finally understanding what she meant. “Uh....I’ve a car waiting for me”.
“You must be pretty special then”, she says without thinking and regrets it as soon as the words left her mouth.
He’s a bit taken aback; but then he ended up laughing, “I guess so”.
The awkwardness that Marina felt before disappears along with his laughter, realizing at the same time that she likes his laugh and certainly doesn’t mind hearing it again. She takes a bite off her watermelon, delighting in the way it refreshes her throat. She had never imagined that she’d be standing out in the open with him and comfortably eating watermelon together. This is certainly a moment she’ll never forget.
That moment is interrupted when she hears her friend calling for her.
Yamapi feels that it is his cue to leave. He caught her name from her friend’s hollering and calls her by her name for the first time, “Marina”. She turns her attention back to him. “I guess I better get going then”
“Yamashita-san”, she calls out as he’s about to walk away. “Thank you”
He smiles at her one last time before turning around to leave.
“Were you with someone just now?” one of her friends asks.
Her friend doesn’t even wait for her reply as she and the rest of the girls start to talk all at once; everyone eager to share their excitement and telling Marina again and again how she’ll regret not joining them earlier.
She decides to keep the brief encounter she just had today to herself. She wonders if he’ll remember her should he ever meet her as Horikita Maki one day.
