And, coming out of the distance was the Doctor, a cobbled-together device in his hands. A human detector, if you will. If one were to look very carefully at the device, one might see that it was made from two toasters, a telephone, a coffee machine, and bits of old pantyhose. But, really, that was only if one was so verymuch inclined.
It was necessary, he'd decided. After the sheer number of humans started turning up on Gallifrey, he needed a way to find them fast, to get them to the safety of the home and field he'd protected.
"Martha Jones!" the Doctor said with a wide grin. "Was wondering when you'd be turning up here."
Martha blinked when she saw the Doctor coming towards her, and for more than a minute was quite certain that he was some sort of hallucination and she was, at present laying on the floor of the apartment in New York. As he moved closer to her, she looked to his hands, and was instantly reminded of the device he'd spent so much time constructing in 1969. Well, this was odd. Had it been weeping angels again?
Since when did weeping Angels send one to Gallifrey, anyway. Still, there was a rather large sigh of relief when he Doctor said her name and grinned at her. At least if he was grinning when she showed up, things couldn't really be that horrible. Maybe a little horrible, but not terrifyingly horrible.
"Have you been expecting me?" Martha asked with a bit of disbelief on her face, but she threw up her arms for a hug. "Is it... really...?" She couldn't bring herself to ask the question, but this definitely seemed like the planet that he had described when asked to talk about his home.
The Doctor scooped Martha up for a big hug. Relief washed over him. Of all of the companions he'd had in recent years, Martha was one of the most capable. It felt like the cavalry had finally arrived and he could take a moment to breathe.
"Hoping, actually," he said. "It's been...a difficult few months here. Could use someone I know I can rely on."
Not that Rose, Jack, John, and Reinette were unreliable. They were just...work. Especially Reinette, after the things the Doctor had said.
"When did you arrive? What's just happened where you are?"
OOC: No worries, I understand. Studying is important! When the Doctor scooped her up, Martha tossed her arms tightly around him. She was certain now that she had been away from him, that there was some sort drug-like effect to his hug. When the Doctor hugged you, you believed that everything the world was going to be all right
