It is a hard thing to explain accurately i think. I played twice, basically it is a writing competition where you are given a topic once a week or so. You have to write something in your journal that relates to the topic. Then people vote on their favorites and the ones with the least votes get eliminated every week.

There are some twists and turns that make it also part reality competition. For example in past seasons people have won the power to give someone immunity, or to choose their own topic. There have been twists where people had to work in pairs.

There is also a social aspect to it. While not a requirement to play, there is a lot of socialization that goes on in the community itself.

For me personally I made some of my best friends on lj through the social part, and also increased my ability as a writer by having to sit down and write something new every week.

The competition lasts until there is only one person left, which changes every time this is run, but seems to run around 6 months or so.
