Spi, I blame you. This scene entered my head, and wouldn't let me work on my actual fic until I put it on paper. Mock it if you will, I don't really care, as I'm writing it by typing it right into this LJ post. It has no point, no plot, just plenty of... no, I won't say. I'll let you find out for yourself what your obsessions have me distracted with.
Title: Obsession
Summary: Daniel gets a new obsession. Vala enjoys Daniel obsessing.

Vala paused in the hallway of the SGC just outside of Daniel's office. This was hardly uncommon. Whenever she could get away with it, Vala not only paused but whenever possible poked her head into the office to see what sort of trouble Daniel was getting himself into. Today, however, she didn't think Daniel was on base. He had a couple of days off, and had hinted at some sort of project he had to do, something he didn't seem very willing to elaborate on, despite all of Vala's pleading. She had even offered to help!
At this moment, though, there was quite a racket coming from behind the door. Loud bangs, followed by what sounded liked heavy objects being dragged along the floor. So was there someone nosing around in Daniel's office, or was he still on the base? Either way, Vala felt compelled to check on the situation.
When Vala opened the door, her jaw dropped. It was obvious that Daniel hadn't heard her come in, as he was the one making all the noise. Stripped to an old pair of jeans and a thin tank top that was soaked with sweat, Daniel was busy doing the last thing Vala had expected when he'd announced he had a new project. He had a hammer in hand, several nails dangling from his mouth, and appeared to be building... something.
What, Vala couldn't tell. At that moment, as she stared at the muscles in Daniel's arms working away at the hammer and nails, she didn't care if he was building anything. Maybe he just liked to pound nails into wood. Vala certainly enjoyed Daniel pounding nails into wood. Almost as much as she thought she might enjoy him pounding...
Daniel looked up, and Vala realized she was caught. Unexplainably, a blush spread from his face, down his neck, and Vala could only assume it continued past the point where his shirt kept her from knowing for sure. He gave her a sheepish smile, and seemed to want to try hiding the hammer in his hands. When he smiled, a nail fell from his mouth to the floor, and Vala couldn't help but giggle.
"What are you doing?"
Daniel reached up to comb a hand through his hair, clearly stalling to avoid answering. As he did so, the shirt he was wearing rose, and Vala was treated to a sight of abdominal muscles.
"I needed shelves."
Vala glanced around the office. There were more bookshelves in here than there was wall space. Whats more, most of them looked to be pretty standard issue SGC shelves, the same kind Vala had seen in Sam's lab, and many other rooms around the base.
"More shelves. Shelves that were actually designed to fit my things. See?" Daniel picked up a book sitting on his desk, and tried to put it on one of the bookshelves currently against the wall. It didn't fit. "I have tons of books like this, which I can't even keep in any sort of logical order. Not to mention all of the things I've collected over the years... These shelves just aren't designed for my needs!"
Vala wanted wondered if Daniel knew how much she needed to see that strip of skin across his navel again. And again. She might need to touch it, too. As much as she was enjoying the sight of Daniel doing physical labor, she had to ask a question, on the hopes that maybe it might mean they could focus on her needs next.
"Are there not stores out there that sell shelves? Companies that might even build them for you?"
For a moment, Vala thought this might have actually slipped Daniel's mind. Then he shook his head. "No, I need them built especially for my needs. It would be too hard to try to explain to someone that I have to be able to fit an Ancient text and a Ga'ould data device on the same shelf. Not to mention all the different reference texts I have... Do you know how much books weigh? Most commercial shelves just aren't built to hold the weight of books that size!"
Vala had always liked it when Daniel started talking passionately about things she didn't really understand. Liked seeing the way his face lit up, the way he'd gesture with his hands as if that would make it all clear. She found she also liked the way he built shelves. Vala looked at the pile of wood leaning up against another wall of the office. He had a lot more shelves to build. Vala had quite a bit of free time over the next couple of days. If she could sneak over to the thermostat, it was bound to get hot enough in the room so that Daniel would be forced to strip off even that thin layer of cotton covering his upper body.
"That makes sense," she lied, giving him an encouraging smile.
Daniel blinked. "You don't think I'm crazy?"
No,I think you're unbelievably attractive at this moment. Not that Vala didn't find Daniel incredibly attractive at almost any time.
"If I say no, will you let me help?"
Daniel shrugged. "Why not, if you really want to. Here, grab a hammer."
Vala did so happily.
Maybe she could convince him to build shelves for her room, as well.
