Hmmm.... There were things that I liked, and things that I didn't. Frustratingly, most of them can be divided down the line of: What they did with Dean: Good. What they did with Sam: Mostly ugh.
Purgatory!Dean and Post-Purgatory!Dean are a combination of terrifying and HAWT. Mostly because of just how cold it made his character. My heart almost broke because I could tell he was looking for Sam to fix things, to bring back his humanity, and Sam...
Maybe I've been reading too much fic, but a dog? Really? Is that the most original thing they could do to introduce the beginning of Sam's transition into domesticity? I guess I just wish that it didn't feel so heavily borrowed from every fanon cliche about Jared. I know that Jared IS a dog lover, but that just made it feel even more like lazy writing.
For the moment, yes, I am more pissed at the dog than I am at the love-interest. I'm sure once they actually try to introduce her as more than just a snarky vet or a sleeping woman that could change.
Otherwise it feels like complete character assassination of Sam at the moment, and since I am a Sam girl it's kind of breaking my heart. I'm kind of feeling a bit like Dean right now wanting to shove Sam against a wall and kiss him until the pain stops and the emptiness goes away and demand he explain what's happened to him to make him change so much.
My one hope, actually, for Sam is the parallels they're setting up between Kevin and Sam. (Demon killed my girlfriend! All I wanted to do was go to a prestigious college!) That was somehow unexpected, but I hope they can do things with that parallel without beating us over the head with it until it's annoying.
Benny is sexy and Dean/Benny is definitely going to get an almost instant following, quite possibly making some Destiel shippers jump onboard for a new OTP. I think the Sam/Dean shippers are going to find enough in this episode ("Our deep abiding love for each other") to keep them from getting distracted, LOL.
I liked that they found a way to insert a couple of the classic light-hearted moments in this episode (Dean with his burger, Sam with his laptop). Maybe it's the anticipation of having waited all summer, but I already feel like this episode had more emotional punch than most of season 7. I also do enjoy that (for now) we're going back to the classic "Shut that door and keep that devil out Shut the gates of hell and keep the demons out" storyline.
And on that note, can someone please find a way to work this into the season? Or at the very least make a vid for it?

ETA: One more thought:
Did anyone else giggle at how tanned Dean/Jensen was throughout the entire episode? I kept thinking gee, I never knew Purgatory was such a tropical destination. I mean, it was HOT, but if you would have asked me, I would have thought that a guy coming from Purgatory (which appeared to always be cloudy/miserable) would be kind of white and clammy looking.
