On Books: Why I love Nick Hornby

Having an indulgently lazy weekend this week: laundry, cooking (I now have stuff in the freezer that ought to feed me for the week, yay!), cleaning the bathroom (French roommate and I went through experiments with baking soda and boiling water this morning so that hopefully it'll take less than half an hour to drain the bath after anyone has a ( Read more... )

*snicker* Oh, that is rather an inspired bit of writing. It makes me feel that I should take another crack at High Fidelity. The last time I read that novel was in college, when it was shoved down my throat without mercy during a Contemporary Fiction in the U.K. (or something like that) course. As with anything foisted upon me in such heavyhanded fashion, my initial efforts to tackle it were halfhearted, at best.

What can I say? I'm a contrary sort. Albeit in a very passive way.

It also occurs to me that I probably ought to be getting around to cleaning the shower . . . An apartment in which four girls share one bathroom might be gross, but those with even one guy get awfully funky fairly quickly, too. Though I do feel I've become something of a father-figure to the sprawling colony of micro-organisms that have taken up residence at the bottom of the bathtub.

Now I'm conflicted.

High Fidelity is great! You'd probably be better set up to read it now too, after a few years of Katey and I foisting random music plus lists, lists, and more lists on you. Although we may have focussed our efforts on a different era. Maybe try About a Boy, which is less obscure sonic reference heavy, while still having that Hornby modern british understated briliance. Literary Britpop, as it were. Trash restated much longer, and in purely verbal form.

Good luck with the conflict! If it helps resolving things at all, pouring a couple of teaspoons of baking soda down the drain and then a jugful of boiling water is extremely fun. Although getting rid of the gross stuff that comes back up isn't so good.
